PL News: Amorim appointed as Man United head coach

Image
Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, currently with Sporting Lisbon, will make the move to Old Trafford on 11 November and has signed a contract lasting until June 2027. Author - Liam C The post Ten Hag era started with a 5-2 win in the EFL Cup Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former United striker who stepped in as interim manager after Erik ten Hag’s departure on Monday, will remain with the team for the next three matches. Amorim becomes the sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year tenure ended with his retirement in 2013. Sporting confirmed in a statement that United agreed to pay €11 million (Ā£9.25 million) to activate the release clause in Amorim’s contract. Amorim’s debut match leading the Red Devils is set for 24 November in the Premier League against newly promoted Ipswich, following the international break. His first game at Old Trafford will be on 28 November against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in...

Ruben Amorim prepares for first game as United boss

Image
It will be all change for Manchester United this weekend Their match against Ipswich will see a new face in the dugout as RĆŗben Amorim takes charge for the first time. Flickr user  freeela sawkaka | Flickr  explores the new manager's tactics The deal to bring Amorim from Sporting Lisbon was finalised on 1 November, but the Portuguese club requested he remain until the international break before moving. Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had been serving as interim manager following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, has also departed. The former United striker was not included in Amorim’s plans for his backroom staff. Amorim's first challenge will be this trip to Ipswich Town. He's expected to introduce his favoured 3-4-3 formation, marking a significant shift from the four-man defence United played under Ten Hag. However, preparations for the match has been disrupted. Many United players have been away on international duty and might only return two days before the game. United fans will...

Man United ease to win over Everton

Image
Manchester United 4 - 0 Everton Ruben Amorim secured his first Premier League victory in style as Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over struggling Everton at Old Trafford. Author - Olivia T After a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town in Amorim's league debut last weekend and a midweek Europa League win over Bodo/Glim t, the Portuguese boss saw his side find their feet on Sunday. Despite a shaky start, they ultimately delivered a clinical performance, with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both bagging two goals apiece. It was a match to forget for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who had been a summer transfer target for United. His misfortune played a key role in the home side’s opening goals. Rashford’s low strike took a deflection off Branthwaite's boot to give United the lead, and moments later, the centre-back was caught dithering on the ball. This allowed Amad Diallo to steal possession and set up Bruno Fernandes, who teed up Zirkzee for a composed fi...

Manchester United's year ends with another defeat

Image
Manchester United 0 - 2 Newcastle United Newcastle United secured a rare league victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, only their second since 1972, as they handed the hosts a third consecutive home defeat – a feat not seen in 45 years. Author - Olivia T This result also marked another unwanted milestone for United, who have now suffered five league losses in a single calendar month for the first time since Sir Matt Busby’s reign in September 1962. Eddie Howe’s side were deserved winners, with early strikes from Alexander Isak and Joelinton sealing the points and lifting Newcastle to fifth in the table to cap off a strong finish to 2024. The in-form Isak continued his hot streak, notching his 12th goal of the season and eighth in his last six matches, scoring in each of those games. In stark contrast, Manchester United were woeful. The last time they lost three consecutive home league games was in 1979, and this performance provided little cause for optimism. Head coach Ru...

United and BodĆø/Glimt produce Europa League classic

Image
Manchester United 3 - 2 BodĆø/Glimt Ruben Amorim's first home match as Manchester United boss ended in a win for his new club. Author -  Liam Chadwick The Red Devils secured a winning start at Old Trafford under new manager Ruben Amorim, coming from behind to defeat Norwegian side BodĆø/Glimt in the Europa League. The home side wasted no time finding the net, with a goal after just 48 seconds – even quicker than their 81-second opener in Amorim’s debut match at Ipswich. The breakthrough came from an error by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin, who hesitated on a routine clearance, allowing Rasmus HĆøjlund to close him down and set up Alejandro Garnacho for a simple tap-in. However, rather than setting the stage for a comfortable evening, the early goal sparked a frustrating spell for the hosts. BodĆø/Glimt responded with two goals in just four minutes, turning the game on its head and taking the lead with less than 25 minutes played. Thankfully for United, HĆøjlund brought Old Trafford to i...

Amorim saves greatest Sporting victory until near the end

Image
Sporting 4 - 1 Manchester City New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim marked his final home game with Sporting by delivering one of his greatest triumphs, inflicting a third straight defeat on Manchester City. Author - Macca This was City’s heaviest loss since September 2020 and only the second time Pep Guardiola has suffered three consecutive defeats in a single season during his trophy-filled tenure. To add to City’s misery, star forward Erling Haaland smashed a second-half penalty against the crossbar. Sporting’s own Scandinavian star, Viktor Gyƶkeres, played a leading role with a fantastic hat-trick. He levelled Phil Foden’s early opener in the 38th minute, then held his nerve to score twice more from the spot in the second half. The first penalty followed a disastrous start to the second half for City, as Sporting took the lead just seconds after the restart when Maximiliano AraĆŗjo latched onto a through ball and struck a precise shot into the corner. United held in Ruben's first match

Image
Ipswich Town 1 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United had to settle for a point at Ipswich in Ruben Amorim's first game in charge, despite striker Marcus Rashford providing an excellent start with an opener just 81 seconds into the match. Author - Olivia T Omari Hutchinson equalized for Ipswich before halftime, while United goalkeeper Andre Onana made two stunning saves to deny Liam Delap.  The outcome was disappointing for Amorim, as his team struggled to contain Ipswich at times and often faced a resolute home defense, which thwarted potential scoring opportunities.  Captain Bruno Fernandes narrowly missed with a late free-kick, but Ipswich fully deserved their point, and without Onana's brilliance, they likely would have scored more goals. Amorim's ambitious choice to start wing-back Amad Diallo paid off when he delivered the low cross that Rashford converted, marking the striker's fifth goal of the season. This was also Rashford's first goal in the Premier ...

Manchester is red this Christmas

Image
Manchester City 1 - 2 Manchester United Manchester United delivered a sensational late comeback to snatch victory from Manchester City in a dramatic derby at the Etihad Stadium. Author - Olivia T City had looked set for the win after Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header, but United turned the game on its head in the dying moments, securing a crucial early triumph for new manager Ruben Amorim. The standout performer was Amad Diallo, who won an 88th-minute penalty after being brought down by Matheus Nunes. Bruno Fernandes coolly converted to level the score. Moments later, Diallo capitalised again, slotting home from a tight angle to complete the turnaround. It was a game of few clear chances, with both sides struggling to create much of note. United appeared to have squandered their best opportunity to equalise when Fernandes, put through by Rasmus HĆøjlund, chipped Ederson but missed the target with 17 minutes remaining. However, the match erupted in the final moments, leaving City’s ...

Amad shines for Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 PAOK Amad Diallo’s second-half brace handed Manchester United a crucial win over Greek champions PAOK, jump-starting their Europa League journey and giving incoming manager Ruben Amorim a real chance at securing a top-eight spot. Author - Olivia T Amad was United’s standout attacking threat, breaking the deadlock just five minutes into the second half with a looping header into the far corner. The Ivorian then wrapped up the win with a curling shot from the edge of the box, 13 minutes from time. PAOK’s best opportunity fell to Tarik Tissoudali, who couldn’t find the target from eight yards out with only Andre Onana to beat. Onana also pulled off an acrobatic save to deny Mady Camara, helping United through a relatively uneventful first half. This victory marks United’s second win in their last 12 European matches, and their first of this season after a run of t hree straight draws in the expanded Europa League. In three weeks, United will take on Norwegian s...

Another home defeat for Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 0 - 1 Wolves Manchester United's league struggles deepened as Pablo Sarabia’s free-kick earned Wolves a fifth consecutive Premier League victory, their best run in the top flight since 1970. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Old Trafford The contrast with United’s midweek display against Lyon could hardly have been starker. This latest defeat was their 15th of the season, eclipsing last year’s total and marking their worst campaign since 1989–90, when they lost 16 times. Ruben Amorim’s side have now been beaten at home by Wolves, joining Crystal Palace, Brighton, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest in claiming three points at Old Trafford since the Portuguese manager took charge in November. United have collected just nine points from their past ten league outings. In that stretch, their only victories have come against Leicester and Ipswich, both of whom are in the relegation zone. Rasmus HĆøjlund came close to equalising, narrowly failing to connect with A...

Injuries and mistakes cost Manchester United again

Image
Newcastle United 4 - 1 Manchester United  It was another dreadful Sunday afternoon for Ruben Amorim's side as mistakes and another injury cost them against Newcastle. Author - Olivia T Stadium - St James' Park The Manchester United boss dropped first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana after his two mistakes against Lyon in Thursday's 2-2 Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw. His replacement Altay Bayındır was guilty of a serious error to seal an easy home win. The Turkey international clipped a ball straight to Joelinton who headed into the path of Bruno Guimaraes to make it 4-1 in the 77th minute. The game was, ultimately, probably over before that Bayindir mistake as Newcastle looked comfortable once Harvey Barnes had made it 3-1.  The visitors also lost Joshua Zirkzee to a suspected hamstring injury, dropped below Everton on goal difference to 14th in the table. They are now three points off fourth-bottom West Ham United. This was their 10th defeat in 21 Premier Le...

Caicedo earns Chelsea draw

Image
Manchester United 1 - 1 Chelsea Moises Caicedo’s precise volley secured Chelsea a well-earned point against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Author - Liam C United’s interim manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is filling in as the club awaits the arrival of new head coach Ruben Amorim, looked on course for a second straight win when Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, following a foul on Rasmus Hojlund by Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Van Nistelrooy celebrated wildly on the touchline , but United’s joy was short-lived, lasting only four minutes before Caicedo fired a superb shot past Andre Onana from the edge of the box. The result was a share of the points from an otherwise low-key encounter. Wesley Fofana rattled the woodwork with a first-half header, while Marcus Rashford also struck the angle of post and bar with a volley before the break. A closer look at Manchester United's performance Van Nistelrooy has managed to draw p...

Manchester United slump to another defeat at Old Trafford

Image
Manchester United 0 - 2 Crystal Palace Manchester United’s home struggles continued as they slumped to a fifth defeat in six Premier League games at Old Trafford, with Jean-Philippe Mateta’s second-half brace sealing a deserved 2-0 victory for Crystal Palace. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Old Trafford In a bold tactical gamble, United head coach Ruben Amorim opted to leave Ā£100m worth of striking talent on the bench, deploying Kobbie Mainoo as a false nine while Marcus Rashford edges closer to a move to Aston Villa. Despite a promising start, the experiment failed, and Palace grew into the game before substitute Eberechi Eze, returning unexpectedly from injury, delivered the moment that changed the contest. His inch-perfect 64th-minute free-kick caused havoc in the United box, with Maxence Lacroix’s header rattling the bar before Mateta reacted quickest, bundling the ball home past a stranded AndrĆ© Onana. The French forward added his second in the dying moments, tapping in Daniel MuƱ...

Controversial winner seals FA Cup progress for United

Image
Manchester United 2 - 1 Leicester City Harry Maguire was the hero as he nodded home a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send FA Cup holders Manchester United into the fifth round, completing a comeback victory over Leicester City. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Old Trafford With extra time and penalties looming, Bruno Fernandes delivered a teasing free-kick into the box, and Maguire rose highest to head it in. The goal was shrouded in controversy, as the defender appeared to be offside, but with VAR not in use at this stage of the competition, the officials let it stand—much to Leicester’s frustration. For United fans, it was a rare moment of joy in what has been a tough spell, with their team losing five of their previous seven home matches at Old Trafford. The evening had started in familiar disappointment when Leicester took the lead just before half-time in an otherwise uneventful first 45 minutes. Bobby De Cordova-Reid reacted quickest after Andre Onana parried Wilfred Ndidi’s eff...

Stoppage-time equaliser denies Manchester United

Image
Lyon 2 - 2 Manchester United A stoppage-time equaliser from Lyon has left Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final delicately poised at the halfway point. Author - Olivia T Stadiun - Groupama Stadium United fell behind after 25 minutes when Thiago Almada’s wide free-kick evaded a strong enough touch from AndrĆ© Onana, whose uncertain handling continues to draw scrutiny. But just before the break, United drew level through Leny Yoro. The 18-year-old notched his first goal for the club, reacting sharply to Manuel Ugarte’s volley and steering it into the bottom corner. The visitors looked to have snatched a late winner when Joshua Zirkzee, introduced from the bench, guided a looping header past the goalkeeper from Bruno Fernandes’ cross in the 88th minute. However, with virtually the last kick of the game, Onana fumbled a shot from Georges Mikautadze, allowing Rayan Cherki to tap in and spark celebrations in the Lyon end. Amad rescues Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 3 - 1 Southampton Amad Diallo delivered a sensational late hat-trick to help Manchester United snatch an unlikely victory over Southampton at Old Trafford, turning what looked set to be a humiliating defeat into a thrilling comeback. Author - Liam C United had been on the verge of a fourth consecutive top-flight home loss—their worst run at Old Trafford since 1930. Struggling to break down a Southampton side that had only one league win all season and were reeling from a 5-0 thrashing by Brentford, the Reds seemed destined for more misery. But Diallo, fresh from signing a new five-and-a-half-year contract just a week earlier, had other plans. Initially deployed as a wing-back, the Ivorian was moved into a more attacking role and completely transformed the game. With nine minutes remaining, he drew United level by bursting into the box, benefiting from a fortunate ricochet, and firing the loose ball past Aaron Ramsdale . In stoppage time, Diallo struck again. Latch...

Maddison marks return with winner for Spurs

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 0 Manchester United James Maddison made an immediate impact on his return from injury, scoring the decisive goal as Tottenham edged out fellow Premier League strugglers Manchester United. Author - Greg S Stadium - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium The midfielder, back after nearly four weeks sidelined with a calf problem, reacted quickest when United goalkeeper AndrĆ© Onana could only parry Lucas Bergvall’s shot, tapping home from close range after just 13 minutes. United had opportunities to respond, with Alejandro Garnacho wasting a clear-cut chance in the first half when he lifted his effort over the bar. But in keeping with their recent struggles, it was another uninspiring performance from Ruben Amorim’s side. For Spurs, this was a much-needed win—breaking a run of three straight defeats, including cup exits to Liverpool and Aston Villa. It also offers some respite for Ange Postecoglou, whose side climbs to 12th in the table, leapfrogging United in the process. Th...

The best reaction to another chaotic weekend at Old Trafford

Image
Manchester United 2 - 3 Nottingham Forest Nottingham Forest capitalised on Manchester United’s defensive errors to secure their first win at Old Trafford in nearly 30 years. Author -  Liam Chadwick Rasmus HĆøjlund cancelled out Nikola Milenković’s early opener, but Ruben Amorim’s side couldn’t draw level again after conceding twice in a seven-minute spell early in the second half. United goalkeeper AndrĆ© Onana was at fault for Forest’s second, misjudging Morgan Gibbs-White’s strike from the edge of the area. Expecting the ball to move towards his right, Onana was beaten on his left as the shot stayed true. The defensive woes continued when Chris Wood, celebrating his birthday, sent a looping header towards the far post. Neither Onana nor Matthijs de Ligt dealt with it, and Lisandro MartĆnez was slow to react as the ball nestled in the corner of the net. While Liverpool chase Premier League glory, Ruben Amorim’s beleaguered United side find themselves nervously glancing over their shoulders at the relegation battle. Martinez secures scrappy win for Manchester United

Image
Fulham 0 - 1 Manchester United Lisandro MartĆnez’s deflected strike secured a scrappy win for Manchester United in a lacklustre encounter at Craven Cottage, with the visitors edging Fulham 1-0. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Craven Cottage The match had been devoid of quality for over 75 minutes, as both sides laboured to create meaningful opportunities. But just as the game seemed destined to drift into a goalless stalemate, MartĆnez ventured to the edge of the box and unleashed a shot that ricocheted off Sasa Lukić, looping beyond a helpless Bernd Leno. Remarkably, it was United’s first effort on target – a cruel twist for Fulham, who were the better side in the opening half but failed to make their dominance count. RaĆŗl JimĆ©nez squandered a golden chance when Antonee Robinson’s delivery found him unmarked, only for the Mexican striker to mis control before firing over the bar. United, who had edged Fulham with a late goal at Old Trafford in August, once again left Marco Silva’s si...
