PL News: Amorim appointed as Man United head coach

Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.

The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, currently with Sporting Lisbon, will make the move to Old Trafford on 11 November and has signed a contract lasting until June 2027.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former United striker who stepped in as interim manager after Erik ten Hag’s departure on Monday, will remain with the team for the next three matches.

Amorim becomes the sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year tenure ended with his retirement in 2013. Sporting confirmed in a statement that United agreed to pay €11 million (£9.25 million) to activate the release clause in Amorim’s contract.

Amorim’s debut match leading the Red Devils is set for 24 November in the Premier League against newly promoted Ipswich, following the international break. His first game at Old Trafford will be on 28 November against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, with a league match against Everton to follow that weekend.

United plan to announce Amorim’s coaching staff at a later date, though he may bring up to five assistants with him.

Following a loss to Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup on 3 August, Amorim has led Sporting, last season’s Primeira Liga champions, on a 14-match unbeaten run.

Amorim is scheduled to be in the dugout on Friday when Sporting host Estrela in a league fixture. Sporting also have a Champions League home game against Manchester City, and his final match in charge will be on 10 November against his former club Braga, just before the European break for Nations League fixtures.

The best reaction

This is how the Manchester United Twitter account announced the news. The comments under the post have mostly been positive.

The admin of the Fight For Man United FC Facebook page was delighted with the appointment. They posted the following:

"Another new manager. This feels like a more positive step. He is among the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting which happened to be the the club's first league title in 19 years. Onwards and upwards."
