It was another dreadful Sunday afternoon for Ruben Amorim's side as mistakes and another injury cost them against Newcastle.

The Manchester United boss dropped first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana after his two mistakes against Lyon in Thursday's 2-2 Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw.

His replacement Altay Bayındır was guilty of a serious error to seal an easy home win. The Turkey international clipped a ball straight to Joelinton who headed into the path of Bruno Guimaraes to make it 4-1 in the 77th minute.

The game was, ultimately, probably over before that Bayindir mistake as Newcastle looked comfortable once Harvey Barnes had made it 3-1.

The visitors also lost Joshua Zirkzee to a suspected hamstring injury, dropped below Everton on goal difference to 14th in the table. They are now three points off fourth-bottom West Ham United. This was their 10th defeat in 21 Premier League games under Amorim.

They now go into Thursday’s crucial match against Lyon with less confidence and more injuries at a crucial stage of the season.

The only positives for Amorim were another Premier League goal for Alejandro Garnacho and a return to action for Luke Shaw alongside more minutes for Kobbie Mainoo.

For Newcastle, their fans were delirious. A spot in next season's Champions League looks almost certain to be in their future.

The result means that they moved up to fourth spot and just a point behind third-placed Nottingham Forest. Remember, 5th place in the Premier League is now enough for Champions League qualification.

Manchester United's winless run continues.

Positivity had started to creep back in at the club following comfortable victories over Real Sociedad and Leicester City. Then came the international break.

Since then, they've lost against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle and managed draws against Manchester City and Lyon. If this run continues, their season will essentially be over after Thursday night.

Newcastle have momentum since that famous League Cup win

That EFL Cup triumph could be the turning point that helps them secure Champions League football this season, that was the view of Antony Gaetes who was at the ground against Manchester United.

He said: "We have won all three Premier League games since that memorable Wembley victory over Liverpool. Being fourth in the table with a game in hand on many of the teams around us is a great position to be in at this stage of the season."
