Premier League reaction: Frank Lampard appointed as Chelsea caretaker boss

 Chelsea have appointed former manager Frank Lampard as caretaker boss until the end of the season. The 44-year-old, who is also Chelsea's record goalscorer, was previously dismissed as head coach at Stamford Bridge following 18 months in the job.  He then took charge at Everton but was sacked in January after less than a year in the role.  Chelsea 6 - 0 Everton Cole Palmer moved level with Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.  He scored a brilliant four-goals, this took him to a total of 20 goals for the season, and helped Chelsea to an emphatic 6-0 win over Everton.  Nicolas Jackson and young substitute Alfie Gilchrist also scored. There was an unsavoury disagreement between Palmer, Jackson and Noni Madueke over who should take a penalty. Stephy Mavididi then scored a fantastic equaliser for the visitors, which led to a tense atmosphere at Stamford Bridge, with the home fans voicing their displeasure with manager Mauricio Pochettino.  However, late goals from substitutes Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke secured the win for Chelsea in a dramatic second half.  AC Milan have completed the signing of Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea on a four-year contract. The two clubs did not disclose the fee involved.  Chelsea officially have a new manager.  They have confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino will become their head coach from the beginning of the 2023/24 season.  The Argentinian will begin his new role on 1 July 2023 on a two-year contract, with the option of an additional year. Their recent Interim boss Frank Lampard took Chelsea to 12th in the Premier League - their lowest finish since the 1995/1996 season. Manchester United 4 - 1 Chelsea Manchester United confirmed their place in the top four of the Premier League after cruising past Chelsea with a 4-1 win at Old Trafford. There was a great atmosphere at Old Trafford Casemiro gave his side the perfect start with a towering header from a Christian Eriksen set-piece after just six minutes, and while the visitors provided a threat in the first half, particularly as the break drew closer. United scored a second goal at a crucial time as Anthony Martial doubled the Red Devils lead deep into stoppage time. Erik ten Hag’s side came out strongly again after the interval, dominating the play but for David De Gea being called into a couple of saves. The Theatre of Dreams turned jubilant as their side steamed ahead with two more goals later in the half. The home side had plenty of chances, with Marc Cucurella superbly denied by Thibaut Courtois in the closing stages of a positive first half as far as the hopeful hosts were concerned. However, it felt like only a matter of time before Carlo Ancelotti's side punished the Blues and in the 57th minute they did, as Rodrygo finished off a ruthless attack. He then bagged another in the dying embers, ending the contest, making it Chelsea's worst run of form in 30 years.  Arsenal 5 - 0 Chelsea Arsenal gave their Premier League hopes a huge lift with a 5-0 thrashing over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. Goals from Trossard and two each from Ben White and Kai Havertz saw Arsenal cruise to the win. The home fans were in dreamland. Arsenal fans may have seen this meeting with Chelsea with a degree of nerves trepidation after they slipped badly and were outplayed by Aston Villa in their last league game at home. At times in that match, it looked like the tension of life at the top got to them.  Coupled with the Champions League exit against Harry Kane's Bayern Munich , Arsenal fans were getting worried that they'd end the season with nothing.
