It's time to explore another football icon. This time it's Denis Law Denis Law had a fantastic career and many older fans of Manchester United still refer to him as The King of the Stretford End. Early Life of Denis Law He grew up in an Aberdeen Council Flat and was the youngest of six siblings. His dad George Law was a fisherman, and this fact would later feature in a chant created by Manchester United fans.  He supported Aberdeen and watched them on the terraces when he had the money to do so. He got his first pair of football boots as a teenager after receiving them as a present. The obsession with football led to Law turning down a place at the local grammar school as their sport of choice was Rugby.   The start of a glorious football career After being scouted by Huddersfield Town, he was eventually signed by the Yorkshire side in April 1955. Not long after, he had an operation to remove his quint. This greatly improved his self-confidence. Following Hudde...

Manchester United suffer another home defeat

Image
Manchester United 1 - 3 Brighton & Hove Albion Manchester United fell to their sixth home defeat of the season at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion. Author - Liam C Yankuba Minteh scored first for the visitors early in the match, but a penalty from Bruno Fernandes midway through the first half seemed to provide the foundation United needed to secure all three points. However, a chaotic second half saw Kaoru Mitoma tap home at the back post, before a mistake from Andre Onana gifted Georginio Rutter a third in an eventful 3-1 victory. It was hardly the way United's players would have wanted to mark the death of their iconic and legendary striker Denis Law . However, they deserved nothing more. This was another dreadful display in what is becoming a very bad season for the twenty times champions of England.  A closer look at what happened This was far from the kind of result or performance that would have honoured the great Denis Law.   The brilliance and flair ...

Manchester United's year ends with another defeat

Image
Manchester United 0 - 2 Newcastle United Newcastle United secured a rare league victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, only their second since 1972, as they handed the hosts a third consecutive home defeat – a feat not seen in 45 years. Author - Olivia T This result also marked another unwanted milestone for United, who have now suffered five league losses in a single calendar month for the first time since Sir Matt Busby’s reign in September 1962. Eddie Howe’s side were deserved winners, with early strikes from Alexander Isak and Joelinton sealing the points and lifting Newcastle to fifth in the table to cap off a strong finish to 2024. The in-form Isak continued his hot streak, notching his 12th goal of the season and eighth in his last six matches, scoring in each of those games. In stark contrast, Manchester United were woeful. The last time they lost three consecutive home league games was in 1979, and this performance provided little cause for optimism. Head coach Ru...

Bruno Fernandes the hero for Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 2 - 1 Rangers Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure victory over Rangers in their all-British clash at Old Trafford. Author - Liam C Stadium - Old Trafford Rangers fans had barely finished celebrating what they thought was a late equaliser from Cyriel Dessers, whose superb 88th-minute strike found the bottom corner from the edge of the box. However, Fernandes quickly silenced the visiting supporters, latching onto Lisandro Martínez's pinpoint cross to the far post and driving a first-time shot through Jack Butland's legs. In the directors' box, legendary former United manager – and ex-Rangers striker – Sir Alex Ferguson could only shake his head at the thrilling finale. The dramatic conclusion ensured the match wouldn’t be remembered solely for Butland's unfortunate own goal. The Rangers goalkeeper attempted to punch away Christian Eriksen's corner in the 52nd minute but inadvertently sent...

The greatest Manchester derbies

Image
Let's take a look at some of the memorable Manchester derbies from the past. It has provided some incredible moments. Man United 0-1 Man City, April 1974. Did Denis Law really relegate Manchester United?  Technically no. United would have been relegated anyway after Birmingham beat Norwich City in their final game of the campaign, It was a definite low point for United though. Seeing their former hero delivering a cruel blow. Man United 4 - 3 Man City, September 2009. Was this the greatest of all Manchester Derbies?  Not long after signing Carlos Tevez, City travelled to United trying to make a statement that they had finally joined the elite of English football. Seven goals and a Michael Owen winner later, they had certainly arrived but it was ultimately heartbreak on this occasion.   Man City 3 - 3 Man United, November 1990 Coming a year after City's historic 5-1 win over United, the reds were out for revenge but found themselves trailing again. Two late go...
