Premier League News: Brendan Rodgers sacked by Leicester City

Image
Leicester City have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers following a 2-1 defeat by Crystal Palace. Rodgers was appointed in February 2019 and led the club to its first FA Cup triumph in 2021.  However, their recent form has been really poor and they now face a battle to stay in the Premier League.  In a statement on the club website , chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said performances and results this season have been below expectations. The statement reads: "It had been our belief that continuity and stability would be key to correcting our course, particularly given our previous achievements under Brendan's management. "Regrettably, the desired improvement has not been forthcoming and with 10 games of the season remaining, the board is compelled to take alternative action to protect our Premier League status." He led Leicester to consecutive fifth-place finishes in his first two full seasons as Foxes boss. He also lifted the FA Cup in 2021. More reaction Kieran is...

Braga stun Celtic after VAR controversy

Image
Celtic 0 - 2 Braga Celtic suffered further European disappointment as goals in each half and a controversial disallowed equaliser earned Braga victory in what was a chaotic encounter. Author |  Sean M Stadium |  Celtic Park Kick-off Kasper Schmeichel had an error-strewn game in goal and failed to keep out Ricardo Horta 's early long-range effort, which stunned the Celtic Park crowd into silence. The Dane then did well to keep out a late shot but was helpless when the ball bounced off Gabri Martinez in a botched clearance and rebounded into the net to seal all the points. After their Champions League qualification failure against Kairat Almaty , and an opening Europa League draw with Red Star Belgrade , this continued Celtic's disappointing start to their European campaign. In fact, so sharp has been the drop-off since last season, that Brendan Rodgers ' side may struggle to qualify for the latter stages of the Europa League unless they can find their way again, and q...

Celtic have signed Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer

Image
Celtic have signed Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer Brendan Rodgers has backed the forward to make a significant impact after the Nigerian striker joined the club as a free agent just before the Europa League. Author | Sean M The 28-year-old has signed a one-year deal in Glasgow, only a day after agreeing to terminate his contract with Sevilla. His arrival comes amid mounting frustration from supporters over the club’s failure to bring in a forward on transfer deadline day. Iheanacho has not played any football since May. This was a late substitute appearance in Nigeria's friendly draw with Jamaica. Despite the backlash, Rodgers was confident his new signing would settle quickly. His pedigree is not in doubt. For Nigeria he has scored 15 times in 58 appearances, playing a part in their run to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2023. Tipped for stardom as a teenager, he was nominated for the Fifa Golden Boy award in 2016 and made his Manchester City debut at 18. He scored 2...

Celtic 2 - 1 Sturm Graz Celtic mounted an impressive second-half surge to secure their first Europa League victory of the campaign and overcome 10-man Sturm Graz. Author |  Sean M Stadium |  Celtic Park Celtic corner Liam Scales and Benjamin Nygren struck in quick succession as Brendan Rodgers’ side finally found their rhythm, much to the delight of a relieved Celtic Park crowd. The Scottish champions entered the night under scrutiny, with only a single point from their opening two group fixtures and a league defeat by Dundee still fresh in the mind. Given testing away trips to Midtjylland and Feyenoord looming next month, the need for three points here felt crucial. Closer analysis of what happened in Glasgow Pre-match huddle There was early frustration, followed by Kelechi Iheanacho limping off within minutes. It did appear to be a worrying sign. Celtic start Europa campaign with battling draw

Image
Red Star Belgrade 1 - 1 Celtic Celtic earned a hard-fought point in their Europa League opener against Red Star Belgrade in a contest that rarely sparked into life. Author |  Sean M Stadium | Stadion Rajko Mitić Celtic fans watch on in the background Second-half goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Marko Arnautovic ensured the spoils were shared, though neither side offered much to suggest they would have belonged at Europe’s top table. Iheanacho, reunited with Brendan Rodgers after joining late in the transfer window , replaced the ineffective Daizen Maeda at the interval and justified the change almost immediately. The former Manchester City and Leicester forward latched on to a clever pass from summer signing Benjamin Nygren and finished calmly past goalkeeper Matheus, moments after squandering a simpler chance from close range. Red Star, however, had threatened before the break. Bruno Duarte struck the side netting and later rattled the crossbar in a first half where the hosts look...

Author | Sean M Stadium | Celtic Park The £40m prize now depends on navigating a testing return leg, with Brendan Rodgers ’ team facing a decisive trip to Almaty on Tuesday. The Scottish champions must contend not only with a long journey of more than 3,500 miles but also the challenge of performing in unfamiliar conditions close to the Chinese border . It might have been worse for Rodgers’ side, who were relieved to see an early Kairat strike ruled out for offside. Their nerves were tested again when Edmilson’s long-range effort, following a mistake from Cameron Carter-Vickers , drifted narrowly over the bar. Celtic were almost undone by an own goal late on, with some desperate defending required to keep Kairat from snatching a winner. Can anyone stop Celtic in Scotland?

Image
It’s a question every top-flight manager, and some beyond, must be wrestling with.  And if the answer seems elusive, a bigger question arises that is, how do you stop them? Their domestic dominance isn’t just impressive – it’s overwhelming. Out of a possible 42 Premiership points, Celtic have amassed 40. They boast a seven-point lead at the top of the table, which could stretch to ten with a win in their game in hand. McGregor, who had announced his retirement from international football earlier in the week, then doubled Celtic's lead with a stunning left-footed strike from 25 yards, capping off an excellent first-half performance. Brendan Rodgers’ side could have added more goals if not for the woodwork, but they will be satisfied with taking three points from a ground where they have struggled at times under Rodgers' management. Author - Sean M With Aberdeen suffering their first league defeat of the season earlier in the day, Brendan Rodgers' side seized the opportunity to establish clear daylight between themselves and the Dons for the first time this campaign. Celtic were sluggish in the first half, though, and were lucky to head into the break level. Blair Spittal and Lawrence Shankland both squandered excellent chances to put Hearts ahead. The second half, however, was a completely different story. Kyogo Furuhashi broke the deadlock with his seventh goal of the season, pouncing on a deflected clearance by Daniel Oyegoke after Craig Gordon's initial save. Minutes later, Nicholas KĂĽhn doubled the lead with a superb counter-attacking goal, finishing clinically to put Celtic firmly in control. Celtic Football Club news and stories Adam Idah add...
