Super News Football | Kelechi Iheanacho as a Leicester City player

The 28-year-old has signed a one-year deal in Glasgow, only a day after agreeing to terminate his contract with Sevilla. His arrival comes amid mounting frustration from supporters over the club’s failure to bring in a forward on transfer deadline day.

Iheanacho has not played any football since May. This was a late substitute appearance in Nigeria's friendly draw with Jamaica.

Despite the backlash, Rodgers was confident his new signing would settle quickly.

His pedigree is not in doubt. For Nigeria he has scored 15 times in 58 appearances, playing a part in their run to the Africa Cup of Nations final in 2023.

Tipped for stardom as a teenager, he was nominated for the Fifa Golden Boy award in 2016 and made his Manchester City debut at 18. He scored 21 goals in 64 games before joining Leicester City for £25m in 2017.

Two years later he came under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, now his manager at Celtic. Iheanacho’s most prolific spell came in Leicester’s FA Cup-winning season of 2020-21, when he struck 19 times. Across his six years at the club he registered 61 goals and 36 assists in 232 appearances.

The question now is whether Rodgers can revive that form in Glasgow. His arrival coincides with growing unrest among their supporters.

Fan group demands a Celtic transfer explanation

A leading Celtic supporters’ group has urged chief executive Michael Nicholson to account for what it described as the Scottish champions’ “failure to strengthen the squad” this summer and “the disarray witnessed on the final evening of the transfer window”.

The criticism followed the departure of Adam Idah to Swansea City, a move that went through despite Brendan Rodgers having previously insisted the forward would not be allowed to leave unless a top replacement had been secured.

All of this followed Celtic's shock Champions League exit which is bound to have a huge financial impact on the club.
