Premier League: Arsenal maintain title challenge

Image
Newcastle United 0 - 2 Arsenal Arsenal clawed Manchester City's lead at the Premier League summit back to one point after they came out on top against Newcastle United. Mikel Arteta's side responded superbly to the pressure exerted by Manchester City's victory over Leeds United to prevail in an action-packed, edgy encounter littered with chances on Tyneside. Newcastle started at lightning pace and Jacob Murphy hit the post and had a penalty award overturned by VAR. Arsenal showed their strength and it was captain Martin Odegaard who followed up his double against Chelsea in midweek by drilling his 15th Premier League goal of the season past Newcastle keeper Nick Pope. Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) What followed was a magnificent game full of opportunities, Pope saved crucially from Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Odegaard before half-time. Martinelli also struck the bar after the break. Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale also produced vital stops

Premier League: City and Arsenal cancel each other out

Image
Manchester City 0 - 0 Arsenal  Manchester City and Arsenal played out a goalless draw, giving Liverpool the advantage in the Premier League title race. Liverpool are now at the top of the table, two points ahead of Arsenal and three ahead of City . They came from behind to beat Brighton at Anfield, and their delight increased even more when their two closest rivals cancelled each other out. This game failed to live up to its billing as a potential classic, as Arsenal's defensive tactics shut down City while the Gunners had limited chances.  Nathan Ake came close with a header early on but it was saved by Arsenal keeper David Raya. City striker Gabriel Jesus posed an occasional threat for the away side. He nearly scored but failed to connect with Bukayo Saka's cross.  The best reaction Lewis, a Chelsea fan, gave us the perspective of a neutral fan: "Manchester City will remain confident in their ability to retain their Premier League title, but their manager, Pep Gua

Premier League: Arsenal prove their title credentials

Image
Arsenal 3 - 1 Liverpool Arsenal narrowed Liverpool's lead at the summit of the Premier League to two points following a well-deserved victory at the Emirates Stadium. Before this dramatic match, Arsenal believed that a loss would have hugely negatively impacted their title chances. Their cause was significantly aided by two blunders from Liverpool's typically reliable goalkeeper, Alisson, who generously handed Arsenal the goals securing three vital points. The final whistle sparked jubilant scenes as Arsenal handed Liverpool only their second league defeat this season, the first since a highly controversial loss at Tottenham in late September. Arsenal reaped the rewards of a swift start when Bukayo Saka provided a 14th-minute lead , slotting home a rebound after Alisson saved from Kai Havertz. Despite dominating proceedings, defensive chaos allowed Liverpool to level seconds before the break, with Gabriel inadvertently turning the ball into his own net following a mix-up bet

Pre Season: Arsenal win on penalties

Image
Arsenal 1 - 1 Bournemouth  Arsenal won 5-4 on penalties Arsenal began their three-match tour of the United States by beating Bournemouth 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.  Fabio Vieira gave Arsenal a first-half lead when he hit Reiss Nelson's deep cross on the volley. The Gunners were pegged back when Antoine Semenyo equalised via a wicked deflection. Far from being friendly, this was a competitive game where several players were booked. After that closely fought 90 minutes, the Arsenal keeper Karl Hein came up trumps in the penalty shootout by saving two spot-kicks, ending the night on the high. Ultimately, pre-season is all about players gaining fitness ahead of the new campaign. From that perspective, it was a worthwhile exercise for both clubs. For Arsenal, their staff will be figuring out how they can improve once again and become Premier League champions for the first time since 2004. You can watch the highlights in the video below The footage is from the AFC Bournemou

Premier League: United unlucky as Arsenal secure dramatic win

Image
Arsenal 3 - 1 Manchester United At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal scored twice in stoppage time to secure a dramatic victory over Manchester United. United thought they had snatched three points before VAR ruled Alejandro Garnacho's 88th-minute finish offside. Limbs. pic.twitter.com/JiDMV59yiO — Arsenal (@Arsenal) September 4, 2023 The drama then switched to the other end when Declan Rice's deflected shot gave Arsenal the lead, then substitute Gabriel Jesus raced clear to seal the victory as the stadium erupted in celebration. Christian Eriksen 's outstanding pass found Marcus Rashford, who cut inside to send an unerring right-foot shot past Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 27th minute. Odegaard's emphatic finish into the bottom corner immediately leveled the match for the Gunners. Arsenal - who had a penalty overturned by the VAR after referee Anthony Taylor initially ruled Havertz fouled - missed a glorious late opportunity when Bukayo Saka shot straight at

Premier League: Title race will go to final day

Image
Manchester United 0 - 1 Arsenal Arsenal ensured the title race will go to the final day with victory over a depleted Manchester United side at Old Trafford. The Gunners display was often unconvincing here but they got the job done. Their manager will be pleased with how they have kept the pressure on Manchester Citty. The only goal of the game came when Leandro Trossard struck after 20 minutes. Lazy defending from struggling veteran Casemiro played Kai Havertz onside, his cross was then turned in by the Belgian at the near post. Manchester United showed plenty of effort and endeavor. However, they suffered from a glaring lack of quality. The Red Devils never seriously tested Arsenal keeper David Raya, as their own hopes of European football next season faded further.  It's looking increasingly likely that they will only qualify for Europe if they beat Manchester City in the upcoming Fa Cup final. What impact will this have on the title race? Arsenal must now hope north London

Transfer News: Raya signs for Arsenal permanently

Image
Do you think this is a good permanent move Arsenal fans? The Gunners have activated the £27m option to permanently buy Brentford goalkeeper David Raya after his successful loan spell last season. Raya kept 16 Premier League clean sheets for the Gunners to win the Golden Glove, conceding just 16 league goals in the campaign. He did have an underwhelming start to the season. His lowest point came after making two errors in Arsenal's last-gasp 4-3 win over Luton in December. Arsenal already had a settled keeper in Aaron Ramsdale, who had played all 38 league matches the previous season, keeping 14 clean sheets. Still, boss Mikel Arteta opted for a new option. Click here for more Arsenal news and stories He missed only two league matches when he was ineligible to face his parent club Brentford. Raya was praised by Arteta for his passing out from the back ended any doubt about his position in March when he saved two penalties as Arsenal beat Porto in a shootout to reach the quarter-

UCL: Bayern end Arsenal's quest for Champions League glory

Image
Bayern Munich 1 - 0 Arsenal  (Bayern Munich won 3-2 on aggregate) Arsenal endured a heart-wrenching departure from the Champions League as Bayern Munich clinched victory in a thrilling match at the Allianz Arena. Joshua Kimmich's commanding header in the 63rd minute, off Raphael Guerreiro's cross, sealed the Germans' path to the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate win, following a 2-2 draw in London in the first leg. Despite hosting the first leg at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal were optimistic about progressing against a Bayern Munich squad that had struggled in their domestic campaign and were missing key players Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman due to injuries. In a tense second leg, observed by Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke, Gabriel Martinelli had the best opportunity of the first half for the Gunners but failed to beat Manuel Neuer, who made a crucial save after Jamal Musiala's earlier attempt. PL: Manchester United 3 - 2 Arsenal

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 800th goal of his career as Manchester United came from behind to beat Arsenal in a thrilling match. New United interim boss Ralf Rangnick and former England captain David Beckham both enjoyed a thrilling encounter Emile Smith Rowe drove home from the edge of the area, while United keeper David de Gea was lying on the ground, seemingly injured, with his back to play. The inevitable VAR check said De Gea had fallen after bumping into and being trodden on by his own teammate Fred. The referee Martin Atkinson eventually gave the goal. Bruno Fernandes levelled finished off an intricate move involving Jadon Sancho and Fred a minute before the break, setting up a pulsating second half. Ronaldo then put United ahead as he swept home Marcus Rashford's cross. Martin Odegaard quickly made it 2-2 with a well-taken equaliser. Atkinson then gave United a penalty after reviewing Odegaard's challenge on Fred on a pitchside monitor - and Ronaldo kept his nerve

Pre Season: Arsenal win in LA

Image
Arsenal 2 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United were defeated in their opening game of the US tour against Premier League rivals in Los Angeles. Højlund gave his team an early lead in the 10th minute, latching onto Marcus Rashford’s first-time pass, overpowering young defender Ayden Heaven, and slipping the ball through keeper Karl Hein’s legs. The Danish forward missed a close-range opportunity from an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross before appearing to suffer a muscle injury just 15 minutes in, forcing him to leave the field. Yoro's departure was similarly unfortunate. The 18-year-old defender, who had only joined United from Lille 10 days ago, went down and required extensive treatment before also having to withdraw. Manager Erik ten Hag was understandably frustrated by these injuries. Despite their strong start, the match didn’t end to the Dutchman’s satisfaction either. Gabriel Jesus equalised with a close-range effort after 25 minutes, which Ten Hag believed should have been r

Premier League: Dramatic scenes in North London

Image
Arsenal 2 - 1 Brentford Arsenal moved once again to the top of the Premier League. Kai Havertz’s fourth goal in successive league games sealed a hard-fought win over Brentford. Having scored 21 times in their previous four league matches, the Gunners were quickly on the look for number 22, and just two minutes in Ivan Toney had to nudge a wicked Rice corner off his line to avoid suffering a quick concession. All the latest Arsenal news and stories from European Super Football can be found here But given their razor-sharp form in front of goal, it always looked like they would soon find the net, and that proved to be the case after 18 minutes. Ben White found Bukayo Saka on the right flank, who returned it to the full-back. He had ample time to put a pinpoint delivery into the area where Rice had got in front of Mads Roerslev to glance a fine header past Mark Flekken and net his sixth goal of the campaign - the best return of his career. EFL Cup: Salford City shock Leeds

Image
Salford City 1 - 1 Leeds United  Salford City won 9-8 on penalties To reach the third round of the Carabao Cup, League Two Salford City stunned Championship side Leeds with an epic penalty shootout win. Ossama Ashley scored at the second attempt after Karl Darlow saved his initial effort, but the keeper was adjudged to have come off his line. The fourth-tier side ultimately won 9-8 on penalties. Former Leeds striker Matt Smith powered home a header from 10 yards before the break to give the hosts the lead against the run of play. After Salford failed to clear a free-kick, Pascal Struijk scored an equaliser for the away side, who also hit the woodwork with Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood, but the Ammies won out on spot-kicks to reach the third round in the competition. Connor McLennan had the chance to win it in the first five penalties, but his effort hit the crossbar after ex-Leeds keeper Alex Cairns saved Georginio Rutter's tame effort. Premier League: United dominate under Old Trafford floodlights

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur United produced their finest performance under manager Erik ten Hag. It was only the brilliance of Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris denied them the truly emphatic victory they deserved.  Fred broke the deadlock two minutes after the break, his shot carrying a degree of good fortune as Lloris was finally beaten by Ben Davies' deflection.  It was no more than United deserved for a display high on quality and intensity. United moved out of sight after 69 minutes when Bruno Fernandes curled a precise right-foot finish beyond the stretching Lloris in front of an noisy and excited Stretford End.  What a win! Premier League: Missed opportunity for Man City

Image
Nottingham Forest  1 - 1 Manchester City Manchester City missed the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League with a draw against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Chris Wood's late goal cancelled out Bernardo Silva's rocket from 20 yards, with the visitors missing chances in abundance to put the game to bed. Erling Haaland volleyed against the crossbar and ballooned the rebound over the top after Aymeric Laporte's header was brilliantly saved by Forest keeper Keylor Navas. Forest claimed a stunning later point. Morgan Gibbs-White's fizzed cross was tapped in at the far post in the 84th minute for Wood's first Forest goal. Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Forest scored with their only attempt on target, having created four chances to City's 23 The draw extended Forest's unbeaten home run to eight games and meant City dropped to second after Arsenal returned to the top with a 4-2 comeback win against Aston Villa earlie

Premier League: Palace stun Liverpool again

Image
Liverpool 0 - 1 Crystal Palace  Crystal Palace have done it against Liverpool again.  Older fans of the London club would have been taken back to the 1990 FA Cup semi-final. Younger fans would have been remembering that stunning comeback from 3-0 down in 2014 that wrecked their title chances. What is it about Palace and destroying Liverpool's trophy dreams? The reaction to the final whistle suggested that this was a hugely damaging week for Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp congratulated his opponent on a Crystal Palace victory that has reverberated at both ends of the table before puffing out his cheeks and shaking his head in despair.  At the end of the match, Andy Robertson looked like he was in a trance. The home fans filed out of Anfield in total silence. In a title race with the tightest margins, Liverpool have blinked first.  Arsenal, would of course, blink later on in the day. This ultimately makes it advantage for Manchester City. It's starting to look like the pressure is

EFL: Improved Birmingham shock QPR

Birmingham City 2 - 0 QPR A resurgent Birmingham City claimed their biggest scalp of the season John Eustace's side battled their way to victory over high-flying Queens Park Rangers. COME ON! @SandowRs ! 😆 pic.twitter.com/Fce5uUqVGc — Birmingham City FC (@BCFC) October 28, 2022 Birmingham fans and players clearly enjoyed their night.   QPR were done no favours by two of their London neighbours as Blues won with first-half goals from two loan men - Arsenal's American defender Auston Trusty and West Ham wing-back Manny Longelo. Any hopes that Michael Beale's side might turn it round after the break were then ended with Blues goalkeeper John Ruddy's fine 79th-minute penalty save to deny Lyndon Dykes. After winning four times in five away games, this was a second straight defeat on the road for QPR, while Blues' third win in five - in front of 19,007, their biggest home crowd since before the Covid pandemic, lifts them into the top half. It looked on the cards ri

Premier League: United and Liverpool play out another chaotic classic

Manchester United 2 - 2 Liverpool "I genuinely feared that we'd be beaten heavily by Liverpool again. I was pleasantly surprised by the result, especially after the first 45 minutes." Those words were sent to us by Liam, a Manchester United Season Ticket holder . He was in the Stretford End as United drew with Liverpool for the second time in the Premier League this season.  How did the drama unfold? Liverpool missed the chance to climb to the top of the Premier League in another thrilling match at Old Trafford. Manager Jurgen Klopp and his players will be left wondering how they failed to avenge the FA Cup quarter-final loss last month. The Anfield side missed numerous chances and were dominating the hosts for long periods. The away side only had a Luis Diaz strike to show for almost total first-half superiority in which they had 15 shots to none from United. The United boss Erik Ten Hag would have been thankful for the visitors' wastefulness and saves from keeper

Nations League: England win on historic night for Kane

Image
England 2 - 0 Finland England captain Harry Kane celebrated his 100th cap by scoring two spectacular goals to lead his team to victory over Finland in the UEFA Nations League at Wembley. Before kick-off, Kane was honoured with a golden cap to mark the milestone and sported golden boots, which he used to break down a stubborn Finnish defence. Despite England's struggles to convert possession into goals early on, with Kane being thwarted twice by Finnish keeper Lukas Hradecky and having a goal disallowed for offside, he eventually broke the deadlock. Click here to discover more news from the England national team Kane netted his 67th international goal with a strike that perfectly suited the occasion. Premier League: Brighton hold West Ham to a 0-0 draw

Image
West Ham United 0 - 0 Brighton & Hove Albion This match marked the first occasion in 24 league matches that Brighton didn't concede a goal, putting an end to a record-setting streak for the club. For West Ham, they would have been hoping to build on their wins over Manchester United and Arsenal but will ultimately be delighted with their points return over the Christmas and New Year period.  Brighton enjoyed more possession and created better chances in what was largely a dull game to kick off 2024 for both teams at London Stadium . The first half lacked quality and opportunities, with West Ham coming closest to scoring as Jason Steele saved James Ward-Prowse's powerful volley with his legs. Jack Hinshelwood and Pascal Gross of Brighton were both thwarted by Alphonse Areola, the home keeper, with point-blank stops.
