Turkey 0 - 6 Spain
Mikel Merino scored a hat-trick as Spain demolished Turkey. The Arsenal midfielder's third in the 57th minute was the pick of his goals as he collected a pass from Lamine Yamal and curled home from over 20 yards out.
Pedri also scored twice and his Barcelona team-mate Ferran Torres claimed the other in what was a comfortable victory for the current World Cup favourites.
Republic of Ireland 2 - 2 Hungary
The Republic of Ireland began their World Cup qualifying campaign with a dramatic comeback, drawing with 10-man Hungary in Dublin.
Hungary stunned the Aviva Stadium early, taking a two-goal lead within 16 minutes through Barnabas Varga and Roland Sallai. Ireland sparked a revival after the break, with Evan Ferguson scoring and Sallai sent off shortly after. Despite further chances being saved, Adam Idah’s stoppage-time header secured a deserved point for the hosts.

Italy’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign began in dismal fashion as they were swept aside 3-0 by a vibrant Norway in Oslo, all three goals coming before half-time in a chastening opening to Group I.

Harry Kane’s close-range finish was enough to hand England a narrow 1-0 win over Andorra and extend their unbeaten start to 2026 World Cup qualifying.
