An own goal from Patrik Hrehovsky put them ahead in the first half, before Trai Hume sealed the result with his first international goal late in the second half. Ultimately, Slovakia didn't deserve anything; Northern Ireland were streets ahead of them.

Closer analysis of what happened

The hosts began brightly, though clear chances were at a premium until Conor Bradley and Ethan Galbraith combined neatly down the right. Galbraith’s low cross was diverted into his own net by Hrosovsky, giving Northern Ireland a deserved lead. Jamie Reid should have doubled it shortly before half-time but blazed over from close range on his weaker foot.

Slovakia were largely subdued and had to wait until the 52nd minute for a real sight of goal, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell reacting sharply to push away Matus Bero’s header. Reid thought he had added a second when he turned in a curling effort from Shea Charles, only for the offside flag to intervene.

The visitors began to grow into the contest, and David Strelec missed a fine chance to equalise when he rolled wide after being played through by Tomas Rigo. Northern Ireland sealed the win nine minutes from time when Hume’s looping strike sailed over Martin Dubravka, sparking jubilation among the Windsor Park crowd.

Best fan reaction

Jeremy: Top performance from Northern Ireland. Great attitude, pressing Slovakia into mistakes, who’ve been well below par. They’re a young side too. Nothing’s been achieved yet, but compared to the dull fare served up by the other home nations, this has been brilliant to watch. Credit to Michael O’Neill.

Jon: We really are a nation that punches far above our weight. With such a young squad too, it’s amazing to see this. Bring on Monday!

Phil: As a neutral, I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a better performance or atmosphere. What a team. Brilliant effort all round, especially from Conor Bradley.
