Needing a win to overtake Real Madrid, the defending champions endured their heaviest defeat to Sevilla since a 4-0 loss in 1951.
Robert Lewandowski missed a second-half penalty after Marcus Rashford had pulled one back with a left-footed volley in first-half stoppage time, briefly giving the visitors hope of overturning a two-goal deficit.
Hansi Flick’s side were second best for much of the contest and deservedly fell to their first league defeat of the season against opponents who had not beaten them in La Liga for more than a decade.
Former Barcelona winger Alexis Sánchez opened the scoring from the penalty spot after captain Ronald Araújo fouled Isaac Romero near the byline. Romero added a second from a swift counterattack before Rashford reduced the deficit from Pedri’s back-post cross.

Sevilla’s well-organised defence limited Barcelona’s chances, and Lewandowski’s missed penalty, following a foul by Adnan Januzaj on Alejandro Balde, summed up their afternoon. Late goals from José Ángel Carmona and Akor Adams compounded a miserable day for Flick’s side, who had already been beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League earlier in the week.
Barcelona remain two points behind Real Madrid, while Sevilla sit in 6th after Atlético Madrid defeated Celta Vigo in Sunday’s late game.
The international break is coming at the perfect time for Barcelona. One fan told us: "To be honest, we probably needed this. I think some fans were starting to believe we were going to cruise to a Treble. Some of the reaction from so-called fans has been insane to these defeats."
