Real Sociedad had taken a surprise lead in the 31st minute when Alvaro Odriozola slid in to finish Ander Barrenetxea's low cross on the counter-attack. Barcelona responded just before half-time as Jules Kounde met Marcus Rashford's corner with a powerful header to level the scores.

Hansi Flick introduced Ballon d'Or runner-up Lamine Yamal in the 58th minute, and the 18-year-old immediately made an impact, beating a defender before delivering a precise cross that Lewandowski nodded home.

Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, impressed once again, creating chances down the left and testing Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro with dipping shots either side of the interval. He was withdrawn in the 78th minute, with Flick likely considering the side’s upcoming Champions League tie against Paris St-Germain.

Sociedad nearly found a late equaliser after Kounde lost possession, but Takefusa Kubo’s effort struck the crossbar. Barcelona then broke at the other end, with Yamal setting up Ferran Torres, whose pass found Lewandowski. The striker’s header hit the underside of the bar and came down on the goal line but did not cross it.

The miss proved inconsequential as the defending champions held on for their sixth win in seven league matches. They now sit a point ahead of Real Madrid, who were defeated 5-2 by Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Biggest talking points and best reaction

Daniel watched the match as a neutral and reflected on Marcus Rashford's future. He said: "The question is whether Barcelona will sign Rashford permanently at the end of the season. I don’t think they will, which explains why there was no obligation to make the move permanent. Rashford has had a mixed start at Barcelona, struggling in difficult games against Levante and Rayo Vallecano. However, he has shown improvement in the recent run of matches while Yamal has been sidelined through injury."

Oliver visited Barcelona for the weekend and watched the match from the stands. He added: "Lewandowski is still scoring in the big leagues at 37, while Messi at the same age is enjoying semi-retirement in the US. Respect to Robert for not taking the easy route."
