After a frustrating first half, which saw the Real players booed off at the break, Vinicius opened the scoring just 90 seconds into the second period. The Brazilian collected a flick-on from Kylian Mbappe, cut inside from the left and struck a shot that took a significant deflection off Santi Comesana, deceiving Villarreal goalkeeper Arnau Tenas at the near post.

Vinicius remained Real’s main threat, adding a penalty in the 69th minute after being bundled over in the box by Rafa Marin. He calmly slotted the ball under Tenas to extend the lead.

Villarreal continued to offer danger on the counter-attack. Moments after England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who had started on the bench, was denied in a one-on-one with Tenas, Georgia striker Georges Mikautadze halved the deficit with a powerful strike into the bottom corner past Thibaut Courtois.

Villarreal full-back Santiago Mourino was sent off for a second yellow card after pulling back Vinicius, and three minutes later Mbappe secured the win, converting Brahim Diaz’s precise cut-back. The match ended on a slightly sour note for Real as Mbappe limped off with what appeared to be a foot injury.

After the match, the Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso was full of praise for Vinicius Junior. He said: "“He had a very good game and played a decisive role, not only because of the first goal but also because of the mismatch we were getting through him. I like it when I see him smiling and enjoying himself. He came close to scoring a hat-trick and rounding off his game”.
