Championship: Luton still without a league win

Luton Town 1 - 2 QPR

Michael Frey played a pivotal role in QPR's comeback against Luton Town, creating one goal and scoring the decisive winner in a brilliant display of hardworking centre-forward play.

Frey smashed home a perfectly judged volley to secure Rangers' first Championship victory of the season, just minutes after his power and awareness set up Nicolas Madsen to equalise.

The equaliser came somewhat against the run of play, much like Luton's opener in the first half, which was handed to them when the unlucky Jimmy Dunne accidentally turned the ball into his own net from close range.

Luton, still without a win and with just one point and two goals from their four league matches, rarely looked like equalising until the final moments of the game. A frantic finish saw Carlton Morris denied by a fine save from keeper Paul Nardi, and Joe Taylor heading over from close range.

Despite their spirited late push, Luton couldn't salvage a draw, and a few boos could be heard around Kenilworth Road at the final whistle.

A closer look at what happened

With neither side having won in their first three league games, and just three days after QPR narrowly beat Luton on penalties in the EFL Cup, a cautious start to the match seemed inevitable.

However, for the first 17 minutes, QPR held onto possession impressively, dominated the midfield, and looked lively going forward. The experienced Jack Colback, returning to the side after suspension, was at the heart of their best play, linking up neatly with Madsen, Kenneth Paal, and Frey to create several promising opportunities.

Alfie Lloyd on the left and Karamoko Dembele on the right both stood out, but Dembele squandered a golden opportunity to capitalise on QPR's dominance. After some excellent build-up play by Frey, he lashed a shot wide of the far post with his weaker right foot.

Luton had been surprisingly passive, but they snapped into action after that warning. They took the lead shortly after their first real attempt on goal forced a corner, which was only partially cleared. Shandon Baptiste whipped the ball back in, and while Mark McGuinness's powerful header was saved by Nardi, the rebound deflected off Dunne and into the net.
