The visitors took an early lead when their captain, James Husband, was left unmarked to head in Lee Evans’ corner just five minutes into the match. Cambridge responded on 28 minutes, with Shayne Lavery equalising against his former club after connecting with a cross from James Brophy.

Husband, who had only scored twice in 180 appearances for Blackpool, unexpectedly doubled his tally by nodding in another Evans corner 10 minutes later. Seconds after the restart, Kyle Joseph capitalised on some hesitant defending from Cambridge, sprinting through to lift the ball over Vicente Reyes, making it 3-1 to Blackpool.

Just eight minutes into the second half, Joseph set up Dominic Ballard to seemingly put the game beyond Cambridge’s reach at 4-1. However, Cambridge had other ideas and launched an extraordinary comeback.

Danny Andrew ignited the revival with a powerful free-kick from just outside the box in the 59th minute. Substitute Brandon Njoku then scored his first professional goal 13 minutes later, finishing from close range to narrow the gap further.

With the Abbey Stadium roaring them on, Cambridge completed the comeback when a scramble in the Blackpool box saw the ball land at Lavery’s feet, allowing him to score his second and level the match at 4-4 with 15 minutes remaining. Both teams ended up with their first point of the season in this unforgettable encounter.

Fan reaction

Ryan Thompson, a Cambridge United fan, told us: "I didn't see that result after 60 minutes. Well done to the players. I hope they gain a lot of confidence from that draw and come back."

Callum, a Blackpool fan, wasn't happy with the way his side played in the last 30 minutes. He added: How did we manage to let that 4-1 lead slip? The manager should have sorted that out before they even started on a comeback! We scored four goals away from home should always guarantee you three points!"
