Premier League: Concerning signs for Everton
Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 0 Everton
Everton's difficult start to the new season worsened with a 4-0 loss at Tottenham, marked by a costly mistake from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Following a 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton on the opening weekend, Sean Dyche's side have now conceded seven goals in their first two games, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table without a goal to their name.
Tottenham's first goal was unstoppable, with Yves Bissouma unleashing a powerful strike from just outside the box, which crashed in off the underside of the bar in the 14th minute, putting his recent controversy behind him.
The match then took a turn for the worse for Everton when Pickford hesitated on a backpass from James Tarkowski, allowing Heung-Min Son to nip in and score into an empty net in the 25th minute.
Pickford's mishap encapsulated a dismal first half for the visitors, who managed just one shot on target, a 58th-minute effort from debutant Jesper Lindstrom, which was comfortably saved by Guglielmo Vicario.
Everton began to find their feet in the second half, but their hopes were dashed in the 71st minute when Cristian Romero headed in from a corner on his 100th appearance for Spurs.
The Toffees' misery was compounded just six minutes later, as a brilliant run from Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven set up Son, who slotted home from a tight angle for his second goal of the game.
While Spurs have kick-started their season with their first win after Monday's 1-1 draw at newly-promoted Leicester, Everton's troubles have deepened. They have now lost their first two Premier League matches for the third consecutive season and are still searching for their first away league win of 2024.
The best reaction
Sarah, an Everton fan, is concerned about the form of Jordan Pickford. She said: "Jordan Pickford has been our best player for several years. Against Tottenham was not one of his best days. The horrendous error on the second goal and not attacking the corner of the third have to be seen as massive errors by the England number one."
Greg, a Spurs fan, gave his thoughts on the match. He said: "I think the most pleasing aspect of the performance is that we didn't even play that well. There's plenty to build up and fans are now a lot more positive compared to Monday night."
