Euro 2024: Slovenia hold Denmark to a draw

Slovenia 1 - 1 Denmark

Christian Eriksen made a triumphant return to the European Championship but this goal wasn't enough against a determined Slovenia side.

Slovenia 1 - 1 Denmark

Eriksen's tournament began spectacularly as he scored the opening goal for his team 17 minutes in, skilfully slotting the ball into the bottom left corner after a clever flick-on from Jonas Wind.

He was a standout performer, with Denmark dominating possession in the first half and creating several opportunities to increase their lead.

However, Slovenia, supported by their loud and enthusiastic fans, equalised when Erik Janza’s powerful shot flew past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with just 13 minutes remaining.

Slovenia's pressure had been mounting in the second half, and star player Benjamin Sesko had already sent a warning shot when he struck the post earlier.

Matjaz Kek’s team, who struggled to contain Eriksen in the first half, nearly clinched a late victory when Andraz Sporar’s shot hit the side-netting and another attempt went wide.

Both Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund and Eriksen had missed chances, while Adam Cerin headed wide at the other end.

This result is definitely a setback for Denmark, who want to surpass their semi-final finish in 2021.

Eriksen's goal capped a strong first-half performance from Denmark. Although Slovenia showed flashes of danger, they were unable to find their rhythm.

RB Leipzig striker Sesko posed a threat, but Slovenia struggled to get him involved as Eriksen combined effectively with club teammate Hojlund, and Wind caused trouble on the flanks.

As the match progressed, Slovenia capitalised on their strength in set-pieces, challenging Denmark's defence with long throws and dangerous corners.

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak made a crucial save to deny Hojlund from close range, preventing Denmark from extending their lead. The best opportunities then fell to Slovenia.

Janza’s goal, a deserved equaliser for Slovenia, came from a corner. He thumped his first-time finish past a static Schmeichel after the ball was flicked on.

Next, Slovenia will travel to Munich to face Serbia on Thursday, while Denmark prepares for a critical match against group favourites England in Frankfurt.
