EFL Cup: Salford City shock Leeds

Salford City 1 - 1 Leeds United

Salford City won 9-8 on penalties

To reach the third round of the Carabao Cup, League Two Salford City stunned Championship side Leeds with an epic penalty shootout win.

Ossama Ashley scored at the second attempt after Karl Darlow saved his initial effort, but the keeper was adjudged to have come off his line. The fourth-tier side ultimately won 9-8 on penalties.

The calm before the storm at Salford City

Former Leeds striker Matt Smith powered home a header from 10 yards before the break to give the hosts the lead against the run of play.

After Salford failed to clear a free-kick, Pascal Struijk scored an equaliser for the away side, who also hit the woodwork with Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood, but the Ammies won out on spot-kicks to reach the third round in the competition.

Connor McLennan had the chance to win it in the first five penalties, but his effort hit the crossbar after ex-Leeds keeper Alex Cairns saved Georginio Rutter's tame effort.

Jamie Shackleton hit the post to set up Ashley to win it for Salford but he briefly looked to have blown it when Darlow went the right way to keep out his strike

However, the referee rightly ordered a retake with the goalkeeper clearly off his line and the 23-year-old made the most of his reprieve.

You could have argued that this was rough on Leeds, who claimed their first league win of the season at Ipswich Town on Saturday. They were the dominant side throughout but found the Salford keeper in superb form.

Dreams of another upset for Salford?

The Ammies will now hope for a glamour tie in the third round of the competition. This is the stage where Manchester United, the club where many of the club's owners made their names as players, will enter the competition.

Kevin, a Salford fan, told us: "As a Salford fan who was the match, I think it’s fair to say we got away with it tonight. However, if you don’t take your chances, you will always pay the price. It was a fantastic result for us with some superb work from keeper Alex Cairns. That combined with dogged defending against a side two leagues above us but we were toothless upfront. I can't wait for the next round, just hope it's an interesting tie for us. Another home match would be ideal."

A number of Salford fans also spoke about their delight on Facebook. Glenn commented: "Well done Salford. That was a great night."

Graham added: "Still happy. I hope we get a really draw in the next round. Arsenal or Liverpool would be ideal."
