Gossip: European Super League could be in place for 2024/2025

The dreaded European Super League is back in the news again

This video from Tifo Football explores how the original idea fell apart. Keep reading this article for the latest news on the European Super League.

It now appears to be back in the news again.

What's being said?

In an article for Sky Sports, it was reported that the chief executive of the company behind the previous failed project has claimed that a new European Super League with no permanent membership could be up and running by the 2024/25 season.

There has also been an interesting article in The Financial Times.

ESPN are reporting some of the developments and what it could mean. Are we close to the idea being relaunched?

A22 Sports Management -- the company that launched the European Super League in April 2021 -- appointed a new chief executive, Bernd Reichart, who claimed it would be relaunched within three years. This comes against the backdrop of legal action taken by the three remaining Super League clubs (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus) against UEFA in a case lodged with the European Union's Court of Justice (CJEU).

In case you have forgotten

The European Super League was launched in April 2021 with 12 founding members - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid - who would permanently take part in the competition. It sparked protests across English football and the idea was eventually put in the bin only a few days later. However, it has remained clear that the idea has never really gone away.

Here are some of the biggest protests that happened during a very controversial period for English and European football as a whole

Manchester United fans got their game v Liverpool in May 2021 postponed.

Whilst, this came after the idea was stopped, it was clear that the ESL anger sparked them into action.

Arsenal fans

Arsenal fans congregated outside The Emirates stadium in their thousands to voice their frustration that their club even considered the idea.

Arsenal's rivals from across North London also got involved. Check out this video from the Tottenham fans.

This was part of the original press release when 'launched' in April 2021:

The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.
