Scotland: Dundee derby proves to be a thriller

Image
Dundee United 2 - 2 Dundee Dundee twice came from behind to deny Dundee United a victory in their Scottish Premiership return, as the first city derby in over two years lived up to its billing as the game of the weekend. There was a fantastic atmosphere created by both sets of fans. After a dull start on Saturday with two 0-0 draws, three early goals set the new top-flight season ablaze. Dundee gave their hosts a guard of honour before last season's Championship flag was raised, then left Kristijan Trapanovski plenty of space to slot the opener after just 13 minutes. Seb Palmer-Houlden equalised from close range five minutes later, but Miller Thomson restored United's lead with a similar finish—all within the first 15 minutes of the game. United deserved their lead, but Dundee finished stronger in a thrilling end that saw a Luke McCowan penalty 11 minutes from time. Dundee United now remain unbeaten in seven derbies , while Dundee have not won at Tannadice in their last 13...

United win on Dundee derby day

Image
Dundee 1 - 2 Dundee United Top scorer Sam Dalby struck a dramatic late winner to hand Dundee United a thrilling derby victory at Dens Park, lifting Jim Goodwin's newly-promoted side to third place in the table. Author - Jack L Dundee took the lead in the second half through Simon Murray's penalty, awarded after a VAR check confirmed Kevin Holt’s handball. But United responded swiftly, with Vicko Sevelj nodding in an equaliser just four minutes later. Then, with two minutes left on the clock, Wrexham loanee Dalby smashed home his 10th goal of the season following a marauding run and pinpoint cross from Holt. Dalby’s clinical finish past Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson sent the packed away end into raptures and ensured United leapfrogged Aberdeen on goal difference. Meanwhile, the defeat sees Dundee slip to ninth. The result extends United’s impressive form, with just one loss in their last nine matches, and maintains their unbeaten run in eight consecutive derbies against the...

Scotland: Celtic eventually ease to win over Dundee

Image
Dundee 0 - 3 Celtic Paulo Bernardo and Mikey Johnston emerged as the unexpected goal heroes for Celtic in their match against Dundee.  However, there is now a concern about Cameron Carter‑Vickers' injury ahead of the upcoming clash with Rangers at Parkhead on Saturday. Bernardo slotted in the opening goal in the 52nd minute at Dens Park, marking his inaugural goal for Celtic. Johnston, coming on as a substitute, netted his first two goals for the Hoops since December 2019, securing a 3-0 victory. Despite leading by five points, the champions face a challenge from Rangers, who have two games in hand, including their midweek match against Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday. Manager Rodgers stuck with the same starting lineup from the 2-0 win against Livingston. Dundee, on the other hand, had Cammy Kerr in for the absent Ricki Lamie, and Zak Rudden returned as one of the two strikers. Celtic took control early on without breaking down Dundee's defence. Kyogo Furuhashi's ...

Celtic back to their best after thrashing Dundee

Image
Celtic 6 - 0 Dundee Celtic strolled to a dominant 6-0 victory at home to Dundee, restoring their 13-point cushion at the top of the Scottish Premiership. Author - Sean M Stadium - Celtic Park The Hoops barely had to shift out of second gear in the first half but still went into the break two goals up—Arne Engels converting from the penalty spot before Adam Idah added a second just before half-time. Jota, rewarded with a start after his goal against Motherwell, looked sharp throughout and once again underlined why bringing him back from Rennes was such an exciting piece of business for Celtic. It was his pinpoint cross that set up Daizen Maeda for his first of the night, before the Portuguese winger showed his class by lifting the ball over Trevor Carson to grab his second just minutes into the second half. Scotland: Celtic remain in charge of title race

Image
Dundee 1 - 2 Celtic A double from James Forrest helped Celtic beat Dundee and maintained their three-point Scottish Premiership lead. A screen grab from a Twitter video showing Celtic players celebrating. Forrest marked his return to the Celtic starting line-up with a stunning first-half volley from the edge of the box and low drive midway through the second period. Dundee got back into the game after Adam Idah deflected an Antonio Portales shot past Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart. Despite some late pressure, they were unable to deny the visitors victory. Despite another win for Rangers, the title is still Celtic's to lose with four rounds of fixtures to play and the Old Firm still to meet.  Dundee remain two points behind fifth-placed St Mirren and remain in contention for a Europa Conference qualifying place. Should they achieve that, it would surely be the best season in their recent history.  You can find out what the Celtic manager thought by watching the video below. Th...

Hibs maintain unbeaten run

Image
Hibernian 4 - 0 Dundee Hibernian claimed a thumping win over Dundee to equal a club-record unbeaten league streak of 17 matches that was set in 1948. Author - Liam Smith Stadium - Easter Road Stadium The victory consolidates third place, moving Hibs three points clear of Dundee United and Aberdeen. They took control through Rocky Bushiri’s first-half opener before substitute Kieron Bowie made a decisive impact off the bench, scoring twice.  Veteran forward Dwight Gayle then also found the net in a lively second-half display. This sealed a wonderful for Hibs.  Second-bottom Dundee remain a point behind Ross County and Kilmarnock but five clear of St Johnstone. Survival in the Scottish top-flight is just about in their hands. A closer look at what happened Dundee arrived in Edinburgh hoping to build on last week’s win and made a measured start, gradually finding their rhythm. A well-drilled free-kick routine gave Simon Murray a clear chance, but the striker was denied by an ...

Dundee United earn a gutsy draw in Vienna

Image
Rapid Vienna 2 - 2 Dundee United  Dundee United kept their Uefa Conference League hopes alive with gutsy display. Author | Alan White Stadium | Allianz Stadion View from the stands in Vienna They twice came back from behind to secure an impressive draw in the Austrian capital. Summer signings Max Watters and Zac Sapsford found the net as United stood firm against one of last season’s quarter-finalists. Already hampered by injuries, they suffered another setback when Isaac Pappoe was forced off early, and endured sustained pressure from the hosts in a raucous Allianz Stadion. Yet they rose to the occasion and will return to Tannadice with a play-off place still very much within reach. A closer look at what happened After a disciplined start, Dundee United fell behind when Petter Nosakhare Dahl drifted past Vicko Sevelj to meet a whipped Bendeguz Bolla cross and sidefoot Rapid into the lead. United refused to be rattled and responded with determination, Sapsford driving down the...

A nervy victory seals Dundee United progression

Image
UNA Strassen 0 - 1 Dundee United (Dundee United won 2-0 on aggregate) A nervy victory over UNA Strassen in Conference League qualifying sealed Dundee  United's progression in Europe for the first time in 28 years. Author | Alan White Stadium | Stade Parc des Sports With a goal advantage from the first leg, the Tannadice side had to wait until midway through the second half in Luxembourg for Iurie Iovu to score with a header, easing any remaining jitters. United's last victory in a two-legged tie (and their last away win on the continent) came in 1997 when they triumphed over the Andorran club CE Principat with a staggering aggregate score of 17-0. Next Thursday, they will face Rapid Vienna in the third qualifying round. A closer analysis of what happened Backed by nearly 1,000 travelling supporters, United began brightly and ought to have gone ahead within three minutes, but Bert Esselink sent his header over the bar. Kartum double fires Hearts into Scottish Cup last four

Image
Hearts 3 - 1 Dundee Sander Kartum lit up Tynecastle with two superb goals as Hearts booked their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals at the expense of Dundee. Author - Mark Lee Stadium - Tynecastle Park The January signing from Brann broke his Hearts duck with a stunning strike from 20 yards to give the hosts a first-half advantage. Joe Shaughnessy nodded in Ziyad Larkeche's cross for parity after the interval but Simon Murray's headed own goal from Blair Spittal's free-kick put the hosts ahead again. And Kartum spun and sliced a low shot through the Dundee defence to ensure Neil Critchley's side progressed to the last four. Elton Kabangu, Calem Nieuwenhof and Alan Forrest were denied by Trevor Carson as Hearts pressed for a more emphatic victory. However, many fans would have accepted a fairly routine victory to reach the semi-finals. Critchley and his players can spend the next three days sizing up their potential opponents on the weekend of 19 and 20 April. The...

Pressure builds on Rangers boss

Image
Rangers 1 - 1 Dundee United Vaclav Černy’s equaliser cancelled out Sam Dalby’s opener, but Rangers couldn’t find the winning goal that would have brought them within six points of Aberdeen and six clear of United. Author - Mark Lee Although this was the first time Rangers have dropped points at Ibrox this season, it’s another setback in their campaign. They've now let 13 points slip across their opening 12 league matches and sit 11 points adrift of leaders Celtic. The match began with Černy and Nico Raskin forcing early saves from Jack Walton, while Nedim Bajrami’s curling effort was tipped wide by the United keeper. Dundee United were well-drilled and disciplined and gradually grew into the game. Vicko Sevelj’s pinpoint deep cross found Dalby unmarked, and the striker headed past the exposed Jack Butland to give the visitors a shock lead. It could have gone from bad to worse for Rangers when Dalby got into a promising shooting position, only for his low effort to be blocked by...

Celtic clinch the title after thrashing Dundee United

Image
Dundee United 0 - 5 Celtic Celtic clinched a fourth consecutive Scottish Premiership title and a 13th in 14 seasons after brushing aside a disorganised Dundee United at Tannadice. Author - Sean M Stadium - Tannadice Park Brendan Rodgers’ side needed only a point to seal the championship but did so with some flourish, making the Northern Irishman the most decorated living Celtic manager with 11 honours, behind only Willie Maley and Jock Stein. Three years on from celebrating Ange Postecoglou’s first Premiership triumph at this same ground, thousands of travelling Celtic fans witnessed another title confirmed well before half time. Nicolas Kühn’s second goal of the day, Celtic’s third, marked their 100th in the Premiership this season and effectively snuffed out any early spark from the hosts. St Johnstone relegated

Image
Hearts 2 - 1 St Johnstone St Johnstone’s 16-year tenure in the Scottish Premiership came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night, undone by a late Ross County equaliser in Dundee and their own defeat in a breathless encounter at Tynecastle. Author - Josh T Stadium - Tynecastle The Perth club had flirted with relegation for months, and despite a glimmer of hope as events elsewhere briefly swung in their favour, the night ultimately ended in despair. Simo Valakari’s side, who have languished at the foot of the table since just before Christmas, are now four points adrift with one match to play — their fate sealed before the final weekend. It was a night that veered between agony and faint optimism. Trailing 2-0 in Edinburgh while County and Dundee remained level, St Johnstone seemed destined for the drop. But when Dundee took the lead late on, hope flickered again. That was extinguished in stoppage time as County struck from the spot, leaving the Perth side beyond reach. At Tynecas...

Celtic extend lead at top of the table

Image
Celtic 4 - 0 Motherwell Celtic maintained their composure despite a shaky start to secure a commanding 4-0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership. Author - Sean M Following a frustrating draw at Dundee United on Sunday, the league leaders took time to find their rhythm. The breakthrough came just before the half-time whistle when a collision between Aston Oxborough and Hyunjun Yang earned Celtic a penalty. Arne Engels coolly converted, slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner as the Motherwell goalkeeper dived the wrong way. Celtic had the better chances in the first half, with Daizen Maeda’s effort blocked by Oxborough. The Motherwell keeper also had a nervy moment when he nearly turned the ball into his own net, but managed to clear it with the help of his defence. Early in the second half, Celtic survived a scare when Tony Watt inadvertently blocked Tawanda Maswanhise’s shot on Kasper Schmeichel ’s goalline, deflecting it behind. The hosts doubled their lead so...

Scotland: Celtic close to another title

Image
Kilmarnock 1 - 4 Celtic Celtic are now only seven points away from retaining the Scottish Premiership after a ruthless first-half performance saw them easily win against Kilmarnock. The away raced into a stunning four-goal lead inside 27 minutes against hapless the hapless home side. Some calamitous defending compounded the home side's woe, gifting the league leaders an excess of chances, which were gobbled up by Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Matt O'Riley during a rampant first period. Fraser Murray's back pass was pounced on by Kyogo to open the scoring. Maeda troubled the visitors' advantage with a well-timed header five minutes later. With Kilmarnock in disarray, the killer blow was dealt when O'Riley profited from Joe Wright's mistake, tucking a neat strike inside the post, before being found by a pinpoint Greg Taylor pass and rifling into the far corner. Kyogo also missed a great chance to add to his mounting goal tally when hitting the post from t...

Forrest the hero on trophy day

Image
Celtic 1 - 1 St. Mirren James Forrest ensured the club’s title celebrations were not dampened as he netted a stoppage-time equaliser to preserve a 16-season scoring streak and deny St Mirren a memorable win.  Author - Andrew Cheshire Stadium - Celtic Park With seconds remaining, the veteran winger swept the ball past St Mirren goalkeeper Zach Hemming, securing a 1-1 draw and extending his remarkable scoring run in every league season since his debut. It was a dramatic end to an afternoon where the visitors looked set to upset the champions and claim a rare win at Celtic Park. Jonah Ayunga had earlier stunned the home crowd with a low drive into the corner after Celtic failed to clear a set piece, giving St Mirren hope of European qualification. A win might have been enough to leapfrog Dundee United into a Europa Conference League spot, especially with United trailing Aberdeen at one stage. But United mounted a comeback in their match, and Forrest’s late intervention ensured th...

Celtic might have to wait another week to clinch title

Image
St Johnstone 1 - 0 Celtic St Johnstone pulled off a surprise victory over Celtic, denying the reigning champions the chance to wrap up the Scottish Premiership title in front of their home support next weekend. Author - Sean M Stadium - McDiarmid Park Brendan Rodgers’ side knew that a win at McDiarmid Park would have set up the opportunity to clinch a fourth consecutive league crown when they host Kilmarnock on Saturday. But an early thumping header from Daniels Balodis, following a well-delivered free-kick by Graham Carey, gave the hosts a crucial lead. That goal, combined with a resilient defensive display, saw the league’s bottom side move to within five points of Dundee. Celtic could still secure the title next weekend if they beat Kilmarnock and Rangers drop points away to Aberdeen on Sunday. However, Balodis’ first goal for the club has, for now at least, postponed any plans of celebrating on home turf. The early breakthrough seemed to energise the Perth side. While Celti...

Image
Despite reduced crowds, there were plenty of goals on an action-packed Boxing Day in the Scottish Premiership. St Johnstone 1 - 3 Celtic Celtic emerged from a "chaotic couple of days" to inflict St Johnstone's eighth consecutive defeat. Two goals from Liel Abada's first-half double had the visitors in total command until Chris Kane halved the deficit. Nir Bitton eventually put the result beyond doubt when he scored a late third to send Celtic into the winter break six points adrift of leaders Rangers who won later in the day. Vincent Kompany’s side were forced to defend for long spells in Saturday’s goalless draw with Bayer Leverkusen, though they remain eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
