Premier League: Crystal Palace 1 - 1 Newcastle United

Image
Life after Steve Bruce began on a positive note for Newcastle United as Callum Wilson’s  overhead kick rescued a point against Crystal Palace. The Magpies were second best for the majority of the game at Selhurst Park but earned a share of the spoils when Wilson sent an acrobatic volley past Vicente Guaita after Palace had failed to clear a corner. Benteke had previously opened the scoring 11 minutes into the second half. He powered a header into the bottom corner from Tyrick Mitchell's deep cross. This was Crystal Palace's sixth draw of the season and leaves them in 15th place, five points above Newcastle, who remain second bottom on four points and without a win this season. The Interim Newcastle boss Graeme Jones later hailed goalscorer Callum Wilson as a unique striker and said :"He is the best matchday finisher I have worked with. That is not even half a chance and it's in the back of the net, which tells you everything about him. "In training he is a good

Fulham comeback stuns Brentford

Fulham 2 - 1 Brentford Harry Wilson delivered a dramatic late twist at Craven Cottage, scoring twice in stoppage time to secure Fulham's comeback win over Brentford. Author - Jamie P Brentord had taken the lead with a spectacular first-half strike from Vitaly Janelt, who unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards that seemed fit to settle any game. But with only eight minutes left on the clock, Wilson came on as a substitute and soon worked his magic. He acrobatically flicked the ball over goalkeeper Mark Flekken with the outside of his boot to net his first, then clinched victory in the 97th minute by stooping low to head in a thrilling second. A closer look at what happened Fulham's performance had deserved a positive result, as they came out strong and kept Brentford, known for their fast starts, on the back foot. Cottagers winger Reiss Nelson, making his first Premier League start, forced two saves from Flekken in quick succession, while Emile Smith Rowe also tested the B

ECQ: England cruise to win against Malta

Malta 0 - 4 England England continued their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying with a comfortable win at Malta. Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a fine 25-yard strike between an own goal and two penalties from Harry Kane and Callum Wilson. Gareth Southgate's side had little trouble dispatching the side 172nd in the Fifa rankings. The England boss would maybe liked a couple of extra goals but apart from that, he'd very little to complain about. You can watch the highlights in the video below. Footage from Channel 4 Sport.  Malta v England (0-4) | Trent Alexander-Arnold Masterclass | Match Highlights | Euro 2024 - YouTube The three points were sealed inside the first 31 minutes as Ferdinando Apap turned past his goalkeeper before Alexander-Arnold's impressive strike. Scotland: Motherwell and Ross County play out dull draw

Image
Motherwell 0 - 0 Ross County Motherwell and Ross County couldn't be separated on the opening day of the new season, ending in a goalless draw at Fir Park. The home side had several chances, but either missed the target or were thwarted by goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw. Academy graduate Ewan Wilson came closest to scoring five minutes from the end, but his powerful shot was tipped away by Laidlaw. Ross County, buoyed by their relegation play-off win in May, struggled to create significant chances and were likely happier with the point. The first real opportunity came after 20 minutes and should have resulted in a goal. Zach Robinson dispossessed Will Nightingale near the halfway line but shot wide when one-on-one with the keeper. Motherwell's next chance tested Laidlaw. A clever chip found Wilson, who cut the ball back to Moses Ebiye, but his close-range shot was brilliantly saved by Laidlaw. Fulham's best opportunities fell to Pereira from long range. Fulham took the lead in the 58th minute with a powerful finish from Wilson after Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier parried a Willian cross into Wilson's path. Fulham continued to apply the pressure and almost doubled their lead when a Pereira free kick rattled the crossbar. And the hosts' second came similarly. Meslier could only divert a cross fr

Oldham Athletic fought back from 4-1 down to secure a 5-5 draw against League Two leaders Forest Green. However, Rovers replied swiftly when Jack Aitchison tucked home from eight yards after meeting a pass from Kane Wilson. They went in front when Mathew Stevens played in Jamille Matt, and he neatly slotted in his fourth goal in three games. Fulham: 23/24 Season Review

Let's explore Fulham's 2023/2024 season. This was their second consecutive season in the Premier League since returning to England's top flight. They finished the season in 13th position. In addition, they reached the semi-finals of the EFL Cup but were knocked out in the 4th round of the FA Cup. Some match reports from their season. Jamie was in the away end and was impressed by elements of his side's performance on that day: "Unfortunately we didn't win, but I think most Fulham fans would say that this is a good result. One of their best performances of the campaign came against West Ham United in December. Fulham dominated t

EFL Cup: Chelsea progress on penalties to beat Newcastle

Image
Chelsea 1 - 1 Newcastle United (Chelsea win 4-2 on penalties) Kieran Trippier had a nightmarish experience at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea secured a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals through a penalty shootout. Despite Callum Wilson's 16th-minute goal appearing to propel Newcastle into the last four, substitute Mykhailo Mudryk seized on the veteran defender's mistake deep into stoppage time, leading to the match heading to penalties. Trippier, who has recently struggled with a dip in form, widened Newcastle's second penalty, and with keeper Djordje Petrovic saving Matt Ritchie's spot-kick, Chelsea transitioned from the brink of defeat to the joy of reaching the semi-finals. It was a harsh outcome for Trippier, a key figure under manager Eddie Howe, whose moment of indecision on a header provided Chelsea with the lifeline Mudryk capitalized on. Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku, and Mudryk all scored in the shootout, while only Callum Wils

Wales get potentially important point

Turkey 0 - 0 Wales Turkey’s striker, Kerem Akturkoglu, squandered an 89th-minute penalty, keeping Wales’ slim hopes of promotion to the Nations League’s top tier alive after a tense goalless draw in Kayseri. Author - Stephen Chad Backed by a fiercely hostile home crowd, Turkey dominated much of the first half. However, it was Wales who came closest to scoring, with Harry Wilson’s effort rattling the post. After the break, Turkey’s substitute Enes Unal missed a golden opportunity, somehow firing wide from just a yard out. As the match edged towards its conclusion, the home side were awarded a contentious penalty when Yunus Akgun went down under a challenge from Neco Williams. But Akturkoglu, the competition’s leading scorer for Turkey, failed to capitalise, his penalty clipping the outside of the post and going wide, to the despair of the home fans. This result leaves Turkey top of Group B4 with 11 points, Wales second on nine, and Iceland third on seven. For Wales to top the group,

Wales 0-3 England Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden star for England Rashford and Foden capitalised on their starting roles to help England knock Wales out of the World Cup with a 3-0 win which also secured the top spot in Group B, setting up a last-16 tie with Senegal. England boss Gareth Southgate had been criticised since the disappointing goalless draw with USA about Foden's lack of game time in the tournament so far and the Manchester City forward showed what he can bring to this stage at the start of the second half. After a dull first 45 minutes, any hope Wales had of qualifying for the last 16 was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart. Rashford fired a free-kick past Danny Ward following Ethan Ampadu's foul on Phil Foden after 50 minutes, with the Manchester City midfielder then marking his return to England's team moments later by turning in Harry Kane's cross at the far post.
