Premier League: Leicester comeback stuns Southampton

Image
Southampton 2 - 3 Leicester City  Russell Martin's Southampton side squandered a two-goal lead in their 3-2 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon at St Mary's. Author - JP Cameron Archer opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing from close range after a swift free kick led to Ryan Manning crossing the ball to him. Southampton then doubled their lead in the 28th minute, with Kyle Walker-Peters driving into the box from the left before setting up Joe Aribo for a simple tap-in. Leicester began their comeback in the 65th minute, when Abdul Fatawu's low cross deflected off Facundo Buonanotte and into the net. Less than 10 minutes later, Jamie Vardy levelled the score with a penalty. Premier League reaction: Southampton relegated

Image
Southampton 0 - 2 Fulham Let's explore all of the best reaction as Southampton's 11-year stay in the Premier League ended in tame fashion.  Aleksandar Mitrovic, making his return from an eight-game ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh, sealed Saints' fate with a stooping header after Carlos Vinicius' opener. You'd have to say it was apt that their relegation should be confirmed at their home ground. They have picked up a poor 10 points out of a possible 57. They will have to improve this form if they want to escape the Championship next season. What did the Southampton boss say? Southampton boss Ruben Selles told BBC Match of the Day: “It is a very tough day – for me, for everybody in the dressing room, for the city, for the fans. It has been a tough season for all of us.  We have been fighting not to be relegated from the very beginning, and the day came today. I just want to say thank you to everybody for the support we felt from the very first day." T...

EFL: Saints continue impressive form

Image
Swansea City 1 - 3 Southampton Southampton set a new club record with an unbeaten streak of 21 games, as they secured a 3-1 victory in Russell Martin's return to Swansea City.  The Saints are now well in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League.  Che Adams opened the scoring just six minutes into the game, slotting home from close range. The momentum continued to shift in Southampton's favour as Will Smallbone tapped in their second goal. However, Swansea managed to pull one back against the run of play with a Jamie Paterson header. The Saints then swiftly regained control, with Flynn Downes' 20-yard drive deflecting into the net. Despite Swansea's late rally , including Jerry Yates and Paterson hitting the woodwork, Southampton comfortably held on to secure three points. This impressive unbeaten run in all competitions surpassed their previous record of a 20-game sequence set in 1921. For Southampton boss Russell Martin, this victory held particular...

Premier League: Southampton remain winless

Image
Manchester City 1 - 0 Southampton Manchester City reclaimed their spot at the top of the Premier League table after an early goal from Erling Haaland secured a narrow victory over struggling Southampton. Author - Sean M Haaland muscled past Jan Bednarek to connect with Matheus Nunes' cross just five minutes in, slipping the ball past Saints’ goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for his 11th league goal of the season. At that moment, it seemed as though the visitors were in for a tough afternoon. However, a combination of resilient defending from Southampton and some wasteful finishing by City—Haaland being a notable offender—left the home fans feeling a bit uneasy until the final whistle. This win extended City’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to 32 matches. They are now only six weeks away from going a full year without a league defeat, their last loss coming against Aston Villa on 6 December. While Southampton deserve credit for their determined display , the result did little to ea...

Southampton 24/25 season review

Image
Let's look at a disastrous season Southampton were relegated back to the Championship Author | Peter Grainger   After winning the promotion play-offs in May, head coach Russell Martin struggled to put together a team that could compete in the Premier League.  Martin was ultimately sacked as Southampton dropped to the bottom of the league in December. This announcement came just a few hours after the team lost 5–0 to Tottenham Hotspur on 15 December 2024. Ivan Jurić replaced him on an 18-month contract on 20 December. On 6 April 2025, Southampton were relegated to the Championship following a 3–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. They were relegated after 31 games, breaking Derby County's 2007–08 and Huddersfield Town's 2018–19 record for the earliest relegation in Premier League history. The next day, Southampton announced that Ivan Jurić had left his role as manager by mutual consent. Simon Rusk then took interim charge for the last seven games of the season. Match reports ...

Leeds substitute Dan James hit the crossbar late on as they pressed for an equaliser, but Russell Martin’s team held on through nearly 12 minutes of added time. Southampton 0 - 5 Brentford Bryan Mbeumo’s double helped Brentford secure their first Premier League away win of the season with a dominant victory over struggling Southampton. Author - Jamie P The visitors took the lead just six minutes in, as Kevin Schade finished off Mikkel Damsgaard's sublime defence-splitting pass. Mbeumo doubled the advantage just after the hour mark, smashing the ball into the roof of the net. The Cameroon international added his second from the penalty spot after Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu fouled Sepp van den Berg. Mbeumo then turned provider, setting up Keane Lewis-Potter for Brentford's first stoppage-time goal. Moments later, Yoane Wissa pounced on a poor header from substitute Yukinari Sugawara to complete the rout. The victory lifts Brentford to 10th in the table, while Southampton remain rooted to the bottom with just six points. Before this game, Thomas Frank’s side had only managed two points away from home – the joint-lowest in the...

Image
Southampton 1 - 1 Ipswich Town Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy delivered a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, denying Southampton their first Premier League victory of the season. The home side had lost their opening four matches of the 2024-25 campaign, but capitalised on an Ipswich error to go ahead just five minutes in, with Tyler Dibling netting his first goal for the club. Click here for more Ipswich Town stories A closer look at what happened Ipswich's Axel Tuanzebe lost the ball inside his own penalty area, allowing Southampton to retain possession. Veteran Adam Lallana, 36, set up 18-year-old Dibling, who calmly slotted past Arijanet Muric. Cameron Archer, who missed a penalty in last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, came close to doubling Southampton’s lead, only to hit the post. Still searching for his first goal since a £15 million summer move from Aston Villa, Archer had another opportunity after being played in by former Ipswich midfielder Flynn Downes,...

West Ham left frustrated by determined Saints

Image
West Ham United 1 - 1 Southampton Lesley Ugochukwu scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to earn bottom side Southampton a deserved point at West Ham, ensuring they avoided matching Derby County’s infamous Premier League record for the fewest points in a season. Author - Jamie P Stadium - London Stadium The 19-year-old midfielder struck in the 93rd minute, driving the ball in off the post to cancel out Jarrod Bowen’s earlier opener at London Stadium. The result takes Southampton to 11 points for the campaign, equalling Derby’s total from the 2007–08 season , with five matches remaining to move clear of that unwanted milestone. Southampton, fighting to avoid the ignominy of becoming the Premier League’s worst-ever side , produced a performance full of energy and purpose. The away support erupted at full-time, not just in celebration but in clear relief. By contrast, West Ham were greeted by boos as their winless run in the league stretched to six matches. Premier League: United back to winning ways

Image
Southampton 0 - 3 Manchester United Matthijs de Ligt netted his first goal for Manchester United, helping Erik ten Hag's team secure a crucial Premier League victory over Southampton. The Red Devils had entered the international break on a low note, following a heavy defeat to Liverpool, and were in dire need of a strong response upon their return. After a shaky start, United found their rhythm, with Andre Onana’s penalty save from Cameron Archer proving a key moment. Shortly afterwards, they seized the advantage. Summer signing De Ligt broke the deadlock , expertly heading into the bottom corner from a brilliant cross delivered by Bruno Fernandes. Just six minutes later, United doubled their advantage when Marcus Rashford scored his first goal of the season, threading a low shot through a crowded box to find the net—his first since March. The quickfire double appeared to take the wind out of Southampton's sails, allowing United to control the second half with relative eas...

Wolves move further clear of relegation zone

Image
Southampton 1 - 2 Wolves Jørgen Strand Larsen struck twice as Wolves moved nine points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone with a crucial victory over a beleaguered Southampton at St Mary’s. Author - Ajay Stadium - St. Mary's Stadium Desperate for just their third league win of the season, Southampton started brightly but found themselves behind from Wolves’ very first effort on goal—Strand Larsen rising to head past Aaron Ramsdale, leaving the Saints goalkeeper with no chance. Chances were scarce for the remainder of the first half, but Wolves took control early in the second when Strand Larsen drilled a low shot into the bottom corner, prompting some home fans to head for the exits. Southampton gave themselves a glimmer of hope when substitute Paul Onuachu reacted quickest to turn in the rebound after Tyler Dibling’s effort struck the post. However, Wolves held firm to see out a vital three points. READ MORE:  The latest Wolves news and stories READ MORE: ...

EFL: Southampton recover after midweek defeat

Image
West Brom 0 - 2 Southampton Southampton made an impressive recovery after their long unbeaten streak came to an end during the week, as they comfortably defeated West Bromwich Albion to reclaim the second spot in the Championship. Just three nights after suffering a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, their first loss in 25 games, Russell Martin's strong and efficient team secured a victory against fifth-placed Albion with well-executed goals from Ryan Fraser and David Brooks in each half. Although Albion were thrown off by the early departure of head coach Carlos Corberan, who was unexpectedly shown a red card for attempting to retrieve the ball from his technical area before it had gone out of play, the hosts failed to put up much resistance against Southampton. It was only their fourth home league defeat in 31 games since Corberan took charge 16 months ago. The incident that led to Corberan's dismissal seemed to unsettle West Brom, but Southampton's Adam Armstrong had alre...

Southampton set to demand huge fee for player

Image
Where will Tyler Dibling be playing his football next season? Southampton are ready to demand a staggering fee of more than £100 million for the Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham target. Author - Macca Source | Ben Livingstone Flickr The highly rated attacking midfielder is set to be one of the most in-demand players in this summer’s transfer window, but Southampton’s hefty valuation is causing frustration among Premier League clubs. Dibling has made just 25 Premier League appearances and looks almost certain to be sold this summer, with Southampton all but relegated to the Championship. Despite expecting strong interest, Southampton are taking a firm stance on his future, reportedly valuing him at more than the £100 million Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in August 2021. Best reaction as Chelsea thrash Southampton

Image
Southampton 1 - 5 Chelsea Jadon Sancho opened his Chelsea account as the Blues took full advantage of Southampton's mistakes to secure what proved to be a commanding victory. Author - Lauren W Sancho rounded off the scoring after goals from Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, and Cole Palmer had already put Chelsea firmly in the driving seat. The home side briefly levelled at 1-1 through Joe Aribo but their capacity to self-destruct was underlined again. Not long after falling 3-1 down, captain Jack Stephens was sent off or pulling Marc Cucurella's hair. Views from the away end Some analysis from me: "I would ultimately describe that as a competent performance overall, but the defence still needs improvement. Some of our player give the ball away too often, and they were caught out by Southampton multiple times early in the match. To 'dominate' the Premier League, we need a settled team with our best players consistently on the pitch." Lewis W a...

It was believed that Marsch  had positive conversations with Southampton officials this week and was expected to succeed Nathan Jones. Having agreed to take over verbally, negotiations with the American faltered because Southampton were only prepared to offer him a contract until the end of the season. However, Marsch was hoping for a longer-term deal. Premier League: Man United held at home

Image
Manchester United 0 - 0 Southampton Manchester United suffered a frustrating 0-0 draw against Southampton at Old Trafford, after Casemiro was sent off in the first half. The Brazilian midfielder was given his marching orders for a challenge on Carlos Alcaraz. Referee Anthony Taylor initially held up a yellow card, before a VAR check persuaded him it was serious foul play. The home side's best chance of the game fell to Bruno Fernandes. His curling effort forced Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to make a great save to force it onto the post. United Review: Reds held against Southampton  David De Gea’s heroics helped to keep the game goalless. He first denied Theo Walcott in the first half with an incredible reflex save from close range.  United started off with a series of quick counterattacks. The best of those came when Antony tried to find the run of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the right-back’s cross was easily dealt with by the opposition defence.  The away side man...

Southampton pay the penalty as Liverpool move closer to the title

Image
Liverpool 3 - 1 Southampton Mohamed Salah converted two penalties as Liverpool came from behind to defeat bottom-club Southampton for the second time this season, stretching their lead at the top of the Premier League to 16 points. Author - William G Stadium - Anfield The Reds were far from their fluent best following their energy-sapping late win over Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, but at this stage of the campaign, securing results is all that matters. This latest victory moves them another step closer to the title, while Southampton remain in serious danger of recording the lowest Premier League points tally in history. The visitors dared to dream when Will Smallbone capitalised on a calamitous mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle. However, Liverpool boss Arne Slot responded with a triple substitution at half-time, and the hosts looked revitalised after the break. Villa eventually seal win over Southampton

Image
Southampton 0 - 3 Aston Villa Aston Villa took a significant step towards securing back-to-back seasons in the Champions League with a 3-0 victory over already-relegated Southampton, despite Marco Asensio missing two second-half penalties. Author - Peter Grainger Stadium - St. Mary's Stadium Unai Emery’s side were made to work for their win at St Mary’s, with all three goals coming after the break and all three scored by substitutes. It marked a piece of Premier League history, as Villa became the first team to have three different substitutes score in a single match. Ollie Watkins, introduced midway through the second half for Marcus Rashford, broke the deadlock when he latched onto a sublime pass from Youri Tielemans and fired in a first-time finish that struck the underside of the crossbar on its way in. Just minutes earlier, Watkins had won Villa’s first penalty after being brought down by Jan Bednarek’s clumsy challenge, only for Aaron Ramsdale to deny Asensio from the spo...

EFL: Leicester have comfortable night against Southampton

Image
Southampton 1 - 4 Leicester City Jamie Vardy scored after 21 seconds to set Leicester City up for a comfortable victory at Southampton. Leicester went in at half-time 3-1 in front after goals from McAteer (18'minutes) and Ndidi (45'+3minutes) put them in a comfortable position. A goal from Edozie gave them some brief hope as they temporarily reduced the deficit. Former Juventus forward Mavididi missed a huge opportunity just after the hour but made amends with the night's best goal. Many Southampton fans are concerned about the goals they were conceding. Their miserable night ended with Kamaldeen Sulemana receiving a straight red card in the closing seconds of the game for a clumsy tackle on James Justin. Highlights You can watch highlights of the match in the video below.
