Best reaction as Chelsea thrash Southampton

Southampton 1 - 5 Chelsea

Jadon Sancho opened his Chelsea account as the Blues took full advantage of Southampton's mistakes to secure what proved to be a commanding victory.

Sancho rounded off the scoring after goals from Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, and Cole Palmer had already put Chelsea firmly in the driving seat.

The home side briefly levelled at 1-1 through Joe Aribo but their capacity to self-destruct was underlined again. Not long after falling 3-1 down, captain Jack Stephens was sent off or pulling Marc Cucurella's hair.

Some analysis from me: "I would ultimately describe that as a competent performance overall, but the defence still needs improvement. Some of our player give the ball away too often, and they were caught out by Southampton multiple times early in the match. To 'dominate' the Premier League, we need a settled team with our best players consistently on the pitch."

Lewis W added: "The performance was excellent. We maintained control of the game and probably should have increased our lead, especially after the unnecessary sending-off. It was great to see the fans supporting Maresca; he has effectively organised the team and achieved the right balance. There is still a long way to go this season, but we definitely have a chance at winning silverware."

Paul Thompson also gave his view: "At the start of the season, I said Champions League qualification would have been an achievement. However, now I think we can challenge Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool for the title. We have an excellent squad and look capable of going on a long unbeaten run."

Southampton fans fearing a quick relegation back to the EFL

Eddie is a Southampton season ticket holder of 35 years. He told us: Yet another poor performance. Stephens should lose the captaincy. The goalkeeper would struggle to play for a National League team. Trust the process? I'm done. Why should I waste my money on that."

Michael had a similar view of the game to Eddie. He added: "Is Russell Martin the only one who doesn’t see the problem? The way the we are giving away goals left and right because of this misguided tactic of passing out from the back is simply ridiculous. The players just aren’t skilled enough for it. It’s becoming truly embarrassing."

Jamie added: "It is starting to look like will go down even more pathetically than last time. Any good players will jump ship in May and we have another huge rebuilding job. It's gonna be a lot harder to get promoted as the Championship is only getting more competitive."
