Premier League: Injury-time equaliser denies Southampton

Southampton 1 - 1 Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy delivered a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, denying Southampton their first Premier League victory of the season.

The home side had lost their opening four matches of the 2024-25 campaign, but capitalised on an Ipswich error to go ahead just five minutes in, with Tyler Dibling netting his first goal for the club.

A closer look at what happened

Ipswich's Axel Tuanzebe lost the ball inside his own penalty area, allowing Southampton to retain possession. Veteran Adam Lallana, 36, set up 18-year-old Dibling, who calmly slotted past Arijanet Muric.

Cameron Archer, who missed a penalty in last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, came close to doubling Southampton’s lead, only to hit the post.

Still searching for his first goal since a £15 million summer move from Aston Villa, Archer had another opportunity after being played in by former Ipswich midfielder Flynn Downes, but Muric was equal to the effort.

That miss proved costly. In the 95th minute, Morsy’s shot from outside the box deflected off Joe Aribo and found its way past Aaron Ramsdale.

Both teams remain without a league win, but Ipswich, newly promoted and back in the Premier League for the first time since 2001-02, were the happier side, celebrating the draw as though it were a victory.

This hard-fought point marks their third draw from five matches, with defeats only against Liverpool and Manchester City. It briefly lifted them from 17th to 16th in the table, until Crystal Palace's 0-0 draw with Manchester United pushed them back to 17th.

Pre match: Southampton 1 - 1 Ipswich

Southampton, earning their first point since returning to the top flight, moved up from 19th to 18th.

Ipswich's last top-flight victory was a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough in April 2002. They will have seen this fixture at St Mary’s as an opportunity, facing fellow newly-promoted Southampton.

However, after battling to a 0-0 draw at Brighton last week, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna will have been frustrated by how easily the hosts took the lead.
