World Cup: England send Wales home

Image
Wales 0-3 England Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden star for England Rashford and Foden capitalised on their starting roles to help England knock Wales out of the World Cup with a 3-0 win which also secured the top spot in Group B, setting up a last-16 tie with Senegal. England boss Gareth Southgate had been criticised since the disappointing goalless draw with USA about Foden's lack of game time in the tournament so far and the Manchester City forward showed what he can bring to this stage at the start of the second half. After a dull first 45 minutes, any hope Wales had of qualifying for the last 16 was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart. Rashford fired a free-kick past Danny Ward following Ethan Ampadu's foul on Phil Foden after 50 minutes, with the Manchester City midfielder then marking his return to England's team moments later by turning in Harry Kane's cross at the far post. Wales were outclassed as they knew they were on the way

PL News: Manchester City warn Phil Foden & Jack Grealish warned over conduct

Image
Manchester City have warned Phil Foden and Jack Grealish have been warned over their conduct after they were left out of their win over Newcastle on Sunday. The England pair were pictured on a night out after City's 7-0 home thrashing over Leeds. City are currently top of the Premier League and the win at Newcastle was their 34th league victory of 202. This is a new record for the most top-flight wins by a team in a calendar year. Foden and Grealish have both been integral to this great run of form. Grealish has appeared in matches since his huge transfer from Aston Villa in the summer.  Foden is a great role model for City's academy but he needs to stop the occasional off the pitch issue.     Pep Guardiola will hope this momentary lack of discipline doesn't become a regular thing.  The City boss told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I pay a lot of attention to behaviour on and off the pitch. And when off the pitch is not proper they are not going to play. "So they h

Premier League: United lose on Derby Day

Manchester City 3 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United put up a strong fight in the derby, but ultimately fell short as Phil Foden's brace secured victory for City, despite Marcus Rashford's early goal. More Premier League news can be found here:  Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Rashford's impressive strike, his sixth of the season, gave United the lead for 48 minutes, withstanding City's constant pressure. However, Foden equalised just before the hour mark with a stunning goal, before scoring again late in the game, followed by a goal from Erling Haaland in injury time. Before the match, Coach Ten Hag stressed the importance of United dominating the midfield and exploiting the pace of their attackers against City's high defensive line. This led to Bruno Fernandes playing in an unusual false-nine role. Fernandes played a key role in setting up Rashford's goal early on, but United missed opportunities to extend their lead. Euro 2024: England battle to win against Serbia

Image
England 1 - 0 Serbia Jude Bellingham inspired England to the start they hoped for at Euro 2024, netting the winning goal and delivering a stellar performance in their victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen. Bellingham's dream season continued, after clinching the Champions League in his debut campaign with Real Madrid, he showcased why he’s seen as England's latest superstar. The 20-year-old rose magnificently to meet Bukayo Saka 's deflected cross with a powerful header after 13 minutes, earning Gareth Southgate's side an early lead. Despite starting strongly with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, England fell into familiar patterns after the break, sitting back and allowing Serbia to press. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a crucial late save from Dusan Vlahovic to maintain their lead. Harry Kane nearly doubled England’s tally when his header from Jarrod Bowen's cross was superbly tipped onto the bar by Serbia's keeper, Predrag Rajkovic. Wh

World Cup: England frustrated by USA

Image
England 0 - 0 USA England edged closer to a place in the World Cup knockout rounds with a lacklustre draw with the USA. They will have to wait until their final group game with Wales on Tuesday to seal a last-16 spot. Only a defeat to Wales by four goals or more would prevent Group B leaders England from making the next stage. However, Southgate will have to field questions about the big drop-off in his team's performance and how they can rediscover form for the business phase of this competition. World Cup: England thrash Iran (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Christian Pulisic crashed a first-half shot against the bar. Harry Maguire then had to head away a series of corners as the Americans put the pressure on in the second half. USA did enough to recalibrate perceptions about England's prospects. Premier League: Missed opportunity for Man City

Nottingham Forest  1 - 1 Manchester City Manchester City missed the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League with a draw against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Chris Wood's late goal cancelled out Bernardo Silva's rocket from 20 yards, with the visitors missing chances in abundance to put the game to bed. Erling Haaland volleyed against the crossbar and ballooned the rebound over the top after Aymeric Laporte's header was brilliantly saved by Forest keeper Keylor Navas. Forest claimed a stunning later point. Morgan Gibbs-White's fizzed cross was tapped in at the far post in the 84th minute for Wood's first Forest goal. Euro 2024: England leave it late against Slovakia

Image
England 2 - 1 Slovakia Jude Bellingham saved England from an early exit in Euro 2024 against Slovakia on Sunday with a breathtaking equaliser in the 95th minute.  Harry Kane then secured their place in the quarterfinals with a winner early in extra time, sealing a 2-1 victory. Slovakia started the match much brighter and gave England several warnings before Ivan Schranz skillfully placed the ball past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 25th minute. England, who will next face Switzerland, had a history of comebacks in their last three Euro matches where they conceded first, including the previous tournament's semifinal. They thought they had equalised shortly after the break, but Phil Foden was clearly offside before he tapped the ball into the net. Kane, unusually, headed a Foden free kick wide, and Declan Rice hit the post as Slovakia were pushed deep into their own half. However, England seemed to lack confidence, and their fans grew increasingly frustrated. Bellingham, cele

Manchester United: 23/24 Season Review

Image
Let's explore Manchester United's 2023/2024 season. It was a campaign full of drama. There was a lot of controversy throughout, but it finished with glory as they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.  After being eliminated from the EFL Cup in the fourth round by the previous season's finalists, Newcastle United, they also experienced their worst performance in the Champions League group stage. They then finished in 8th position, their lowest ever place in the Premier League era.  We will now experience some of those key reports and stories from the season. The season started with a 1-0 win over Wolves. In this match, Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory. It wasn't a great performance though and perhaps a sign of things to come. A few weeks later, they lost 3 - 1 at home to Brighton. After this match, we spoke to Liam, a United Season Ticket holder. He said: &

World Cup: Stories from the last 16

Jude Bellingham was England's star man, setting up the first goal for Jordan Henderson with a perfect cross after 38 minutes then having a hand in the second on the stroke of half-time, combining with Phil Foden as captain Harry Kane powered home his first of the tournament. This all leaves the Spurs striker just one behind Wayne Rooney's all-time record of 53 England goals and he now has the perfect stage here in Qatar to write a fresh page in the history books. Friendly: England triumph over old rivals

Image
Scotland 1 - 3 England In a raucous Hampden Park friendly, England continued their modern-day superiority over Scotland.  Scots last won this fixture in 1999, but hopes of a 42nd win appeared ominously faint as Phil Foden's opener silenced the stadium before Jude Bellingham added a second. A shaken Scotland eventually awoke the home crowd as Harry Maguire sent Andy Robertson's cross screeching beyond Aaron Ramsdale. A mesmerizing Bellingham assist enabled Harry Kane to score England's third as a result of England's classy play and intricate movement. Top of their European Championship qualifying group with five wins from five and facing an England team held by Ukraine on Saturday , Steve Clarke spoke before the match about the desire to see how much his team had narrowed the gap between themselves and England. An almost ruthless first half from Gareth Southgate's team offered a sobering reply. After a slick, composed and controlled performance, the visitors des

International Friendly: England and Belgium play out enjoyable draw

They displayed good potential at times in attack but they were vulnerable at the back, and this was ruthlessly exploited by Belgium before Bellingham's dramatic intervention seconds from time. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a rare error, his first to cost a goal in 60 international appearances, when his poor clearance led to Youri Tielemans putting Belgium ahead after 11 minutes. Ivan Toney scored his first international goal on his first England start, equalizing from the spot just six minutes after he was brought down by Jan Vertonghen. Premier League: Liverpool 2 - 2 Manchester City

Image
Liverpool and Manchester City produced the game of the season so far with an absorbing encounter at Anfield. All four goals came in the second 45 minutes with City twice pegging Liverpool back. You can see some of the best moments from the game in the video below. Both teams will ultimately feel they might have won this game. Manchester City’s attack looks like it can cause problems for any team in the world but you'd still have to wonder if City's main weakness is their lack of an out and out striker.  There was some top-class football on show from both sides but there were some controversial moments. James Milner will know he was extremely lucky not to be sent off here for persistent fouling before he was eventually substituted just after 70 minutes.  Reaction from the men in charge The Liverpool manager said after the match:  "Probably less than average, we were too passive with and without the ball and played right into City's hands. That was the worst half we ha

UCL: Madrid and City play out a classic

Image
Real Madrid 3 - 3 Manchester City There was a quite incredible night of football in Real Madrid. Let's explore what happened.  This video below is from the official Real Madrid YouTube account. The current Champions League holders Manchester City took took the lead in the second minute when Bernardo Silva intelligently placed a 25 yard free-kick round the wall and past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. This lead was quickly overturned. Deflected strikes from Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo helped 14-time European champions Real overturn the deficit at the Bernabeu. A lot of fans and pundits were saying that City were lacking quality in the final third. This was until Phil Foden, who had been on the periphery of the game, found some space outside the area to turn and fire into the top corner to pull last year's Treble winners level. 2-2 quickly became 2-3 which then became 3-3 Only a few moments later, Josko Gvardiol cut in and found the far corner with a superb right-foot shot to scor

Ballon d'Or shortlist announced

Image
The shortlist for Ballon d'Or 2022  has been announced, and there have been some interesting developments. Let's take a look at some of the talking points. No Messi and Neymar! Lionel Messi and Neymar have not been included on the 30-man shortlist for the 2022 Ballon d'Or. The Argentina international has won the most Ballons d'Or in history with seven, but he did not make the list despite scoring 11 goals in 34 matches for Paris Saint-Germain last season. His team-mate Neymar is also not on the list. He played just 28 times for PSG last season in an injury-hit campaign. Kylian Mbappe does make the list. Recognition for the Lionesses  England's Euro 2022 success has been recognised. Millie Bright, Beth Mead and Lucy Bronze have been nominated for the women's Ballon d'Or, awarded to the best female footballer of 2022. Premier League: A pivotal day in the title race

Image
Saturday 25th February is being seen by many as a very important day in the title race. Here's how Arsenal and Man City got on. Leicester City 0 - 1 Arsenal  A 46th-minute goal by Gabriel Martinelli at the King Power Stadium was enough to maintain Arsenal's advantage over Manchester City.  A defeat against a relegation threatened Everton side earlier this month sparked a winless three-game spell that included a loss to City and threatened to blow them off course, but those memories now appear to have been banished. Arsenal defended well when they needed to. It was then over to Man City. One Arsenal fan told us: "This feels like an important win!" Bournemouth 1 - 4 Man City City never looked in danger of dropping more points once Julian Alvarez put them ahead. Erling Haaland looked back to his best and maintained his goal-a-game ratio by tucking home a close-range second for his 27th top-flight goal of the season to end a relatively lean spell of one in six games.

World Cup qualifying: England 1 - 1 Hungary

England's path to the 2022 World Cup hit a stumbling block when they were held to a 1-1 draw against Hungary. In a slightly subdued atmosphere once order had been restored (more on that further down this story).  Hungary took the lead in the 24th minute when Luke Shaw fouled Loic Nego and Roland Sallai sent Jordan Pickford the wrong way from the penalty spot. England were level on 37 minutes afted John Stones turned in at the far post after Tyrone Mings and Declan Rice touched on Phil Foden's free-kick. More football news from around Europe can be found here.  Watch the highlights from the match in the video below Game marred by crowd violence Hungary fans fought with police in the opening minutes of their World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley.
