UCL: Liverpool thrashed and facing trophyless season

Image
Liverpool 2 - 5 Real Madrid Liverpool are facing a season without a trophy after being thrashed by Real Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Holders Real - who beat Liverpool in last season's final in Paris - became the first side to score five at Anfield in Europe despite going two goals down early on as Liverpool made a dream start to this last-16 tie. UCL: Real Madrid win Champions League (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Darwin Nunez's brilliant flick put Liverpool ahead after only four minutes before Mohamed Salah cashed in on Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois' awful clearance to double their lead around 10 minutes later. It then all started to go very wrong Vinicius Junior's superb strike after 21 minutes pulled a goal back before Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson hacked a clearance straight at the Brazilian, holding his head in anguish as the ball looped behind him into the net in front of a shocked Kop End. It was at this point when Will, a Liverpool fan f...

UCL: Best ever Champions League finals

Image
Let's explore some of the best Champions League and European Cup finals. There have been some truly memorable encounters in the final of the competition since it started in the 1950s. Real Madrid 4 - 3 Stade de Reims: 1956 A football match that you have probably never heard of. This was actually the first final of the European Cup. Real Madrid triumphed in what would prove to be the first of five consecutive title in the competition. On this night, the Spanish giants came back from behind to win 4–3. This was thanks to goals from Alfredo Di Stéfano and Marquitos, as well as two goals from Héctor Rial. Benfica 1 - 4 Manchester United: 1968 A memorable night where Man United became the first English side to win Europe's premier competition.  United took the lead from Bobby Charlton's header eight minutes into the second half. UCL: Real Madrid win Champions League

Image
Liverpool 0 - 1 Real Madrid Liverpool's bid to claim the Champions League trophy for the seventh time ended in disappointment as Real Madrid won in Paris. Jurgen Klopp's side were thwarted by Thibaut Courtois. The former Chelsea keeper produced one of the great individual performances to stopLiverpool time and again. Mohamed Salah was denied six times by Courtois who was simply unbeatable. Real were always a threat and the decisive moment came after 59 minutes when Vinicius stole in unmarked at the far post to score. The victory also sees Carlo Ancelotti make history by becoming the first coach to win a fourth Champions League title. Some of the best reaction The Liverpool boss spoke about the result and his side's performance : "After the game when I saw the stats it was 50-50 possession. We had a lot more shots, a lot more shots on target, but the most decisive stat is absolutely on Madrid’s side. Just to make sure that nobody thinks I wouldn’t congratulate Real Ma...

UCL: Liverpool and City progress

Image
Let's have a look at all the reaction from another dramatic night of Champions League football. Atlético Madrid 0 - 0 Manchester City (Agg:0-1) City produced a  disciplined performance to hold off the challenge of Atletico Madrid - and set up a Champions League semi-final showdown with the Spanish side's city rivals Real. Knowing a clean sheet would be enough to seal the tie, City kept their cool in the face of a hostile home crowd and intimidation from a physical Atleti side showing far more ambition than in the first leg. The Manchester City boss told BT Sport: "It is the champion of Spain and they played with energy. Overall we are in the semi-finals, it is well deserved. The opponent is so tough, all the teams in the Champions League come here and suffer so it is important we go through." Tough and intense one, but we withstood it well! On to the semis! 💪🏼💙 @ManCity pic.twitter.com/XOWfk6w0xA — Ilkay Gündogan (@IlkayGuendogan) April 13, 2022 UCL: A memorable...

UCL: AC Milan 1 - 2 Liverpool

Image
Liverpool became the first English side to win six Champions League group games as they picked up a victory over AC Milan in Italy. Jurgen Klopp made several changes with qualification for the last 16 already assured as group winners. However, the Serie A leaders went in search of the win they hoped would secure their own passage into the last 16. Milan's hopes rose on the half-hour when Takumi Minamino missed a near-post corner and goalkeeper Alisson could only push the ball out to Fikayo Tomori, who then scored from close range. Despite all the changes, Mohamed Salah was stikl in the starting line-up and once again demonstrated his ability with an equaliser that came seven minutes later. He put home the rebound after Milan keeper Mike Maignan saved from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It means Salah has became the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush to score 20 goals in five successive seasons. The away side continued to dominate and Divock Origi scored his first goal in the competi...

João Félix did have the ball in the net for the visitors, but Marcos Llorente had strayed offside before teeing up the Portuguese striker. It proved a short reprieve for United.
