The hosts, disjointed from the outset, have now lost nine of their past 12 matches in all competitions and were comprehensively outplayed by the Dutch champions at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s domestic struggles have been plain to see, arriving here on the back of successive three-goal defeats, but Europe had at least offered a measure of relief. Three wins in four, including an impressive victory over Real Madrid, had given Liverpool a foothold in the league phase.

This setback, however, leaves Slot under increasing scrutiny, with questions mounting over the team’s direction and how he intends to arrest their alarming slide.

PSV struck early after just six minutes when Virgil van Dijk raised an arm while appealing for a foul, only to concede a penalty for handball. Ivan Perisic stepped up and calmly converted.

Liverpool responded with a degree of urgency and drew level 10 minutes later. Matej Kovár parried Cody Gakpo’s shot straight into the path of Dominic Szoboszlai, who finished from close range.

The hosts did improve but couldn't take advantage

Gakpo went close and van Dijk saw a powerful header come back off the bar, but PSV regained the lead when Mauro Junior threaded a precise pass through and Milos Kerkez was unable to prevent Guus Til from finishing.

The evening deteriorated further for Liverpool when substitute Couhaib Driouech reacted quickest to turn in the rebound after Ricardo Pepi’s effort was saved, sparking jubilant celebrations among the travelling support.

Driouech struck again in stoppage time, guiding a low shot into the corner after a slick counterattack, sealing PSV’s first victory over English opposition since defeating Tottenham in the 2008 Europa League and lifting them to 15th in the standings.

Liverpool, down to 13th, now face a mounting battle to secure a top-eight berth and will need a swift improvement to halt their downward trajectory.
