Let's have a look at what happened

Manchester City had it won at 5-3 on aggregate as the game went into injury time. However, two Rodrygo goals for a Real side that had previously not had a shot on target took the game to extra time.

Karim Benzema's penalty eventually settled it for the Spanish side. Even then City came back. Substitute Fernandinho was close to meeting a Cancelo cross. But, tried as they might, they couldn’t force a late piece of magic to find a response and it’s Real Madrid who will go through to face Liverpool in the final later this month.

It was a simply breath-taking game of football. On the previous night, Liverpool survived a scare against Villarreal to progress.

Reaction

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, told BT Sport: "I cannot say we are used to living this kind of life, but what happened tonight, it happened against Chelsea and also against PSG. If you have to say why it is the history of this club that helps us to keep going when it seems that we are gone."

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City winger Steve McManaman added: "I know Manchester City have had problems in this competition before but this was the most brutal way to go out."

Pep Guardiola told the Manchester City website: "It is tough for us. We cannot deny it. We were so close to arriving in the Champions League final.

"We didn’t play much good in the first half. We didn’t find our game, but it’s normal in this competition. The second half was much better. After the goal we controlled it.
