UECL: West Ham win Conference League

Image
Fiorentina 1 - 2 West Ham It has been 43 long years since West Ham United last lifted major silverware. That wait has now come to the most sensational of endings. Every single final has its hero. After SaĂŻd Benrahma’s penalty on 62 minutes had been cancelled out by Giacomo Bonaventura’s well-taken finish just five minutes later. It would be Jarrod Bowen who would write his name into Hammers history forever. Bowen made no mistake when it mattered most, latching onto Paquetá's clever pass through the ACF Fiorentina defence and smartly scoring. The manner of victory was rather sweet for West Ham and all their fans. The celebrations of the Premier League team were something to behold. Click here for more West Ham news and stories. The victory ends a wait of more than forty years for major silverware. It also means they have won a European trophy for the second time in their history following the club's UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1965. The victory also guarantees the...

Premier League: Dramatic afternoon in Sheffield

Image
Sheffield United 2 - 2 West Ham United Sheffield United's Oli McBurnie scored the latest goal in the Premier League, scoring a 103rd-minute penalty to rescue a point for his side against West Ham. Sheffield United were awarded the spot-kick in the eighth minute of added time when Hammers keeper Alphonse Areola was judged to have taken out McBurnie. Latest Premier League news can be found here:  Premier League news and stories: 2023/2024  The forward then smashed his effort beyond substitute stopper Lukasz Fabianski after Areola was forced to leave the pitch with an injury.  West Ham seemed to be smoothly heading for a 2-1 win following James Ward-Prowse's successful penalty in the 79th minute. Maxwel Cornet had earlier given the Hammers a lead in the first half, marking his first goal for the club, but Ben Brereton Diaz equalized just before halftime on his Premier League debut. The second half of the game brought heightened excitement, with two red cards and tw...

Toothless Arsenal dealt major blow

Image
Arsenal 0 - 2 West Ham United Arsenal missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool, as West Ham ended their four-game winless streak with a superb win at the Emirates. Author - DJ Stadium - Emirates Stadium Jarrod Bowen struck the decisive goal against a lacklustre Gunners side, who later saw youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly sent off. A win would have put Arsenal within five points of Arne Slot’s Liverpool, ahead of their trip to Manchester City on Sunday. But Mikel Arteta’s side never found their rhythm, struggling to break down a resilient West Ham defence while also conceding the better chances over the 90 minutes. Bowen’s goal, his 50th in the Premier League, came late in the first half as he started and finished the move himself. After picking up a loose ball on the edge of his own area, he fed Aaron Wan-Bissaka and then continued his run, stooping low to head home the full-back’s cross. It was the first time this season that Arsenal had gone be...

Premier League: Controversial penalty wins it for West Ham

Image
West Ham United 2 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United will be wondering how they have lost this game. Jarrod Bowen scored a penalty in injury time to condemn The Red Devils to a 2-1 defeat. Author - Olivia T A closer look at what happened at the London Stadium That late penalty from Jarrod Bowen handed Manchester United a 2-1 defeat in the Premier League, easing the pressure on West Ham’s manager, Julen Lopetegui. Casemiro had briefly revived United’s hopes of taking a point, heading in with less than ten minutes to go to cancel out Crysencio Summerville’s 74th-minute goal.  Controversy struck with just three minutes remaining when referee David Coote was called to the pitchside monitor by the Video Assistant Referee to review Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings in the box. Despite protests from United’s players, who claimed a handball by Ings, Coote awarded the penalty, and Bowen kept his cool to slot the ball past AndrĂ© Onana. Click here for more Premier League n...

Europa Conference League: West Ham pick up first-leg win

Image
West Ham United 3 - 1 Viborg FF Gianluca Scamacca scored his first West Ham goal as they beat Danish side Viborg in their Europa Conference League play-off first leg at London Stadium. The Italian forward, a £30.5m signing from Sassuolo, was handed his first start and took just 24 minutes to make an impact when he headed in following neat play on the left from fellow new arrival Maxwel Cornet. West Ham players celebrate - Picture from  Football Pictures | Flickr It set the hosts on their way to a first victory this season, having lost their opening two Premier League games without scoring a goal. Jarrod Bowen zipped a second into the bottom corner from distance with 26 minutes to go. However, the visitors hit back immediately through Jakob Bonde's header. That almost made life uncomfortable for the Hammers until Said Benrahma and Michail Antonio combined for the latter to tap into an empty net and secure a healthy advantage going into the second leg. That second leg will take p...

Premier League: West Ham hold Liverpool to a draw

Image
West Ham United 2 - 2 Liverpool  Liverpool's title hopes were dented again after Michail Antonio scored to rescue a point for West Ham at the London Stadium. Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring just before the break when he rose highest to meet Mohammed Kudus' cross. At this point, Liverpool were showing little evidence that their Merseyside derby loss in midweek had done much in the way of spurring them on. Klopp's side were much improved in the second half and Andy Robertson equalised when he scored from Luis Diaz's low pass into the penalty area. Liverpool were then rewarded again for their pressure when Cody Gakpo's effort from a corner deflected off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek and Alphonse Areola before finding the back of the net. Antonio's fine header put the Hammers back on level terms two minutes before Liverpool brought on Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian couldn't win the game for Liverpool and appeared to have fallen out with the manager.  You can w...

Lopetegui's struggles at West Ham continue

Image
West Ham United 0 - 5 Liverpool  Liverpool stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points as they thrashed an abject West Ham United at the London Stadium Author - William G Liverpool could have been out of sight early on, squandering several chances before Luis DĂaz finally broke the deadlock with a powerful strike on the half-hour mark. Cody Gakpo doubled the lead 10 minutes later, capitalising on Mohamed Salah’s mesmerising footwork, and the Egyptian himself got in on the act with a precise low drive just before half-time – his 20th goal in a remarkable season. West Ham, under Julen Lopetegui, failed to even contain the damage. Trent Alexander-Arnold made it 4-0 nine minutes after the restart, his long-range shot deflecting off Max Kilman to leave Alphonse Areola helpless. For the hosts, only Mohammed Kudus showed any sign of resistance, striking the woodwork in both halves, while Luis Guilherme also hit the frame of the goal late on. However, these f...

International Friendly: England and Belgium play out enjoyable draw

Image
England 2 - 2 Belgium Jude Bellingham late on to secure a draw for England in a friendly against Belgium, preventing a second consecutive defeat at Wembley. More reaction to #ENGBEL coming up on https://t.co/kHngVy25Il https://t.co/SFvnhfj4d4 — European Super Football (@ESFootballNews) March 27, 2024 Having lost at home to Brazil, Gareth Southgate's reshuffled side was a mixed bag. They displayed good potential at times in attack but they were vulnerable at the back, and this was ruthlessly exploited by Belgium before Bellingham's dramatic intervention seconds from time. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a rare error, his first to cost a goal in 60 international appearances, when his poor clearance led to Youri Tielemans putting Belgium ahead after 11 minutes. Ivan Toney scored his first international goal on his first England start, equalizing from the spot just six minutes after he was brought down by Jan Vertonghen. West Ham left frustrated by determined Saints

Image
West Ham United 1 - 1 Southampton Lesley Ugochukwu scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to earn bottom side Southampton a deserved point at West Ham, ensuring they avoided matching Derby County’s infamous Premier League record for the fewest points in a season. Author - Jamie P Stadium - London Stadium The 19-year-old midfielder struck in the 93rd minute, driving the ball in off the post to cancel out Jarrod Bowen’s earlier opener at London Stadium. The result takes Southampton to 11 points for the campaign, equalling Derby’s total from the 2007–08 season , with five matches remaining to move clear of that unwanted milestone. Southampton, fighting to avoid the ignominy of becoming the Premier League’s worst-ever side , produced a performance full of energy and purpose. The away support erupted at full-time, not just in celebration but in clear relief. By contrast, West Ham were greeted by boos as their winless run in the league stretched to six matches. Frustration conti...

England ease to comfortable win over Latvia

Image
England 3 - 0 Latvia Thomas Tuchel made it two wins from two as England manager with a World Cup qualifying victory over Latvia at Wembley. Author - Mark Lee Stadium - Wembley Stadium Just as in their previous match against Albania, England found themselves frustrated for long spells against a side ranked 140th in the world before finally converting dominance into goals. Chelsea captain Reece James marked his first England start since September 2022 with a superb free kick from 20 yards, curling the ball into the net seven minutes before half time. Despite controlling possession, England struggled to extend their lead as Latvia defended doggedly. That changed in the 68th minute when Harry Kane turned in his 71st international goal from Declan Rice’s cross. With Latvia tiring, substitute Eberechi Eze added a third with a deflected strike 14 minutes from time, scoring his first England goal. The result saw Tuchel become the first England men’s manager to win his opening two competiti...

UEFA Nations League: Hungary edge out England

Image
Hungary 1 - 0 England In this Nations League match, England produced one of their worst performances of recent time.  Southgate’s team were strangely passive, lacking bite in the areas that mattered, especially the final third, and they came to threaten too late, playing with the bit between their teeth only after they fell behind to Dominik Szoboszlai’s 66th minute penalty. The award was soft, but it was correct and punishment for a moment of clumsiness from Reece James, who had only just entered as a substitute. 🇭🇺 Hungary beat England for the first time since 1962! 👏👏👏 #NationsLeague pic.twitter.com/62Y3bS88X8 — UEFA Nations League (@EURO2024) June 4, 2022 James touched a cross back towards his goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, and worried that he had not put enough on it. And so he stepped across Zsolt Nagy to make sure that the Hungary wing-back could not give chase. Nagy went down theatrically and England had a sinking feeling. Szoboszlai once told Neymar before he took...

Premier League; Brighton boost European hopes

Image
Brighton & Hove Albion 4 - 0 West Ham United Brighton boosted their hopes of European qualification  with a thumping Premier League victory over struggling West Ham. How successful could this season end up being for Brighton? When their former manager left for Chelsea, very few fans would have expected them to be above the side from London by the time we reached this stage of the season. Alexis Mac Allister put Albion in front midway through the first half, converting from the spot after Jarrod Bowen bundled Kaoru Mitoma over in the area. Substitute Joel Veltman doubled the hosts' lead soon after half-time, chesting the ball in at the far post following a corner. This was before Mitoma slid in to make it 3-0. Brighton fans were already loving their afternoon at this point.  Danny Welbeck added further gloss to the scoreline late on, drilling a right-footed shot into the bottom corner to condemn the Hammers to their biggest defeat of the season. Deserved victory f...

England return to Nations League top tier

Image
England 5 - 0 Republic of Ireland England sealed their return to the top tier of the Nations League in stunning fashion, thrashing the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in Lee Carsley’s final game as interim manager. Author - Peter Grainger from GMCR Football Lee Carsley now hands the reins to Thomas Tuchel, who takes charge from 1 January. During his tenure, Carsley guided England to five wins in six matches, with his team delivering a commanding second-half display here after a lacklustre opening 45 minutes. Harry Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second half. The England captain's brilliant through-ball set Jude Bellingham free, only for Bellingham to be brought down by Liam Scales, earning the defender a second yellow card and a sending-off. What's the point of the UEFA Nations League? With the Republic reduced to ten men, England took full advantage. Anthony Gordon netted his first senior international goal just two minutes later, tappi...

Conference League: West Ham take first-leg lead

Image
UEFA Europa Conference League Semi-final first leg: West Ham United 2 - 1  AZ Alkmaar West Ham's dreams of a first major trophy since 1980 are still alive. They came from behind to secure a Europa Conference League semi-final first-leg win over AZ Alkmaar at their London Stadium. Pre match - the West Ham fans created an incredible atmosphere The Hammers' hopes of reaching the final in Prague on 7 June were hanging by a thread when Alphonse Areola made a mess of saving Tijjani Reijnders' low shot four minutes before the break. However, David Moyes' side turned the tie on its head after half-time. <Click here for more news from the London Stadium> The Hammers had former Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan to thank for offering them a way back into the contest when he recklessly punched Jarrod Bowen in the face as he arrived late to challenge for a high ball the England man actually headed over. After Ryan took an age to take his position for the penalty, Said Benrahm...

More Premier League misery at Old Trafford

Image
Manchester United 0 - 2 West Ham United It was another disappointing afternoon in the Premier League for the Europa League finalists. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Old Trafford Tomas Soucek and captain Jarrod Bowen were on target as West Ham ended a run of eight Premier League matches without a win, easing to victory over a Manchester United side whose preparations for the Europa League final appear increasingly uncertain. United named a starting XI featuring five players expected to line up against Tottenham in Bilbao on 21 May, but the match brought more questions than answers. Most troubling for RĂşben Amorim was the injury to Leny Yoro, who left the pitch visibly distressed after sustaining a foot problem and headed straight down the tunnel. The setback prompted the immediate withdrawal of Luke Shaw, a potential option in the back three for the final in Spain. The defeat means United have now matched their longest winless run in the Premier League since 1992. On that occasion, the...

Premier League: Soucek secures a point for West Ham

Image
Brentford 1 - 1 West Ham United Tomas Soucek's second-half goal secured a point for West Ham against Brentford after Bryan Mbeumo netted a lightning-fast opener for the hosts within the first minute. For the third consecutive Premier League match, Brentford scored in under 60 seconds, with Mbeumo expertly curling a volley beyond Alphonse Areola's reach. Despite the early setback, West Ham maintained a positive approach, dominating the chances in the first half. Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio, and Mohammed Kudus all had opportunities, though only Kudus managed to test the keeper. Brentford, after their early burst, seemed content to sit back and absorb the pressure. Their next significant effort came in the 34th minute when Mbeumo headed over the bar. West Ham’s persistence paid off shortly after the break. Soucek, drafted into the starting line-up to replace the suspended Edson Alvarez, capitalised on a loose ball and calmly slotted home from close range. Premier League: 202...

Euro 2024: England name final squad for Germany

Image
England have confirmed their 26-man squad for the European Championships Gareth Southgate has revealed his final 26-man squad, and some notable names are missing. Manchester City's Jack Grealish, Manchester United's Harry Maguire, and Tottenham's James Maddison have all been left out. Burnley's goalkeeper James Trafford, Liverpool's defender Jarell Quansah, Everton's defender Jarrad Branthwaite, and Liverpool's midfielder Curtis Jones, who were part of the initial 33-player shortlist, have also not made the cut. Manchester United's Luke Shaw who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since mid-February, is part of the squad. This has come to the surprise of many but his experience and nature as one of England's best left-backs probably swung that in his favour. Manchester City looking to boost Champions League hopes

Image
Manchester City v West Ham United preview Manchester City kick off their 2025 Premier League campaign with a home fixture against a struggling West Ham United side. Author - Macca The reigning champions have endured a tough spell, winning just one of their previous 13 games across all competitions before last weekend’s trip to the King Power Stadium. However, they managed a much-needed, albeit scrappy, win in the East Midlands, with Savinho playing a starring role.  On paper, a visit from West Ham might seem like a straightforward task for Pep Guardiola’s side, but City’s recent form at the Etihad has been anything but convincing. They’ve managed just one win in their last five home matches and were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Everton in their most recent outing on home soil. As for West Ham, their form had been on the up before a humbling 5-0 defeat to league leaders Liverpool halted their progress. Head coach Julen Lopetegui had been under less pressure in recent weeks,...

Euro 2024: England battle to win against Serbia

Image
England 1 - 0 Serbia Jude Bellingham inspired England to the start they hoped for at Euro 2024, netting the winning goal and delivering a stellar performance in their victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen. Bellingham's dream season continued, after clinching the Champions League in his debut campaign with Real Madrid, he showcased why he’s seen as England's latest superstar. The 20-year-old rose magnificently to meet Bukayo Saka 's deflected cross with a powerful header after 13 minutes, earning Gareth Southgate's side an early lead. Despite starting strongly with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, England fell into familiar patterns after the break, sitting back and allowing Serbia to press. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made a crucial late save from Dusan Vlahovic to maintain their lead. Harry Kane nearly doubled England’s tally when his header from Jarrod Bowen's cross was superbly tipped onto the bar by Serbia's keeper, Predrag Rajkovic. Wh...
