Championship: Leeds and Pompey play out opening day classic

Image
Leeds United 3 - 3 Portsmouth Brenden Aaronson salvaged a dramatic late point for Leeds United on their opening day, as they were pushed to the limit by Championship newcomers Portsmouth. Leeds took the lead when Pascal Struijk coolly converted a penalty after Daniel James was brought down. However, Pompey equalised through Elias Sorensen. Portsmouth then seized the advantage just before half-time with a stunning long-range strike from Callum Lang, but Leeds responded almost immediately after the break, with Willy Gnonto slotting in an equaliser. The drama intensified in stoppage time when Portsmouth were awarded a penalty after Jayden Bogle’s challenge on Christian Saydee. Lang calmly converted the 92nd-minute spot-kick, giving Pompey what seemed to be a late victory. But Aaronson had other ideas, firing in a low shot to ensure Leeds claimed a point. Elland Road was bouncing Joel Piroe then made it 2-0 when he headed in Willy Gnonto's deep cross to the far post. Norwich keeper Gunn was caught in no man's land, this left them 2-0 early on and with a mountain to climb. Despite their poor performance, they did have opportunities that, if scored, would have made a game of it. They should have pulled one back immediately. Premier League: Man United and Leeds United produce a classic

Image
Manchester United 2 - 2 Leeds United Man United fought their way back from being two goals down to take a point against Leeds United at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford and substitute Jadon Sancho levelled Wilfried Gnonto’s first-minute strike and Raphael Varane’s own goal to move Erik ten Hag’s men three points ahead of Newcastle United in the Premier League table. The Reds got back into the game after a difficult 60 minutes. After that, United dominated. The Leeds goal lived a charmed life at times. Fred and Fernandes missed efforts that could have brought the Old Trafford house down. Instead, Leeds held out for five minutes of stoppage time, doing well to kill our momentum on occasion, and will be the more pleased of the two sides with the outcome.
