Premier League: Man United held at home

Image
Manchester United 0 - 0 Southampton Manchester United suffered a frustrating 0-0 draw against Southampton at Old Trafford, after Casemiro was sent off in the first half. The Brazilian midfielder was given his marching orders for a challenge on Carlos Alcaraz. Referee Anthony Taylor initially held up a yellow card, before a VAR check persuaded him it was serious foul play. The home side's best chance of the game fell to Bruno Fernandes. His curling effort forced Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to make a great save to force it onto the post. United Review: Reds held against Southampton  David De Gea’s heroics helped to keep the game goalless. He first denied Theo Walcott in the first half with an incredible reflex save from close range.  United started off with a series of quick counterattacks. The best of those came when Antony tried to find the run of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the right-back’s cross was easily dealt with by the opposition defence.  The away side managed to create

EFL Cup: United impress against Palace

Image
Manchester United 3 - 0 Crystal Palace Holders United moved into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup after goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro before Martial's clinical first-time effort 10 minutes after the restart. After a few weeks of chaos, this was the kind of night United manager Erik ten Hag must have wanted as his side clinched their most significant win of the season. With Mason Mount back in the starting XI and fellow summer signing Sofyan Amrabat making his first start, Ten Hag was at least able to integrate some key pieces of his United puzzle. There were also plenty of examples of controlled possession, which Ten Hag has so far struggled to implement. Evidently, the game plan was to create an overload on the United right with lofted cross-field passes from the left, which both Amrabat and Mount were able to execute. Morocco international Amrabat caught the eye as an inverted left-back. The on-loan Fiorentina man's early shot was poor, but he was excellent

Pre Season: United and Betis entertain crowds in San Diego

Manchester United 3 - 2 Real Betis Manchester United lifted the Snapdragon Cup, at the stadium of the same name, after they deservedly beat Real Betis. After Iker Losada's opener for the opposition, Erik ten Hag's men had to come from behind to get the win. The Red Devils achieved this in style, scoring three first-half goals in a fantastic 13-minute spell. The first was scored by Marcus Rashford from the penalty spot. Amad then followed up with a screamer before Casemiro scored a tap in.  Diego Llorente's second-half header did make it a closer contest, at least in terms of the scoreline. From a United perspective, it was another night when the manager was able to give more valuable minutes to aa decent number of his squad. Could Casemiro be back to his best? It seems the Brazilian will now stay at United for at least another season. This shouldn't be a problem if Casemiro plays next season like he did against Real Betis. The 32-year-old midfielder was everywhere,

UCL: Bayern and United play out a classic

Image
Bayern Munich 4 - 3 Manchester United Bayern Munich and Manchester United played out a classic Champions League encounter in Munich. Harry Kane was heavily involved.  This was not Kane's best game, with him floating in and out of it, but he did what was required. His neat set-up enabled the opener and he made no mistake with a typically ruthless penalty. No better way to start our @ChampionsLeague campaign at home 🙌 #MiaSanMia pic.twitter.com/kYeMuhkbAK — Harry Kane (@HKane) September 20, 2023 Following a VAR review, the England captain scored a penalty at the Allianz Arena, taking his tally of goals in all competitions this season to five in five games. Kane's goal came just after Rasmus Hojland's first United goal made it 2-1 early in the second half and gave his side some hope of a result. The Champions League is back! Earlier, in the 28th minute, goalkeeper Andre Onana had undone a disciplined start by allowing Leroy Sane's drive to slip under him and into

Premier League: Late drama at Stamford Bridge

Image
Chelsea 1 - 1 Manchester United  There was some late drama at Stamford Bridge Casemiro's stoppage-time header gave United a deserved point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.  Jorginho's late penalty had looked like it was going to give Chelsea a narrow win. He sent David de Gea the wrong way from the spot after substitutes Scott McTominay and Armando Broja tangled at a corner three minutes from time.  A deafeat would have certainly been harsh on United but they got the reward their performance merited when Casemiro rose to meet Luke Shaw's cross deep into six minutes of stoppage time. Reaction Chelsea boss Graham Potter had already beaten Manchester United this season, winning at Old Trafford with Brighton on the opening weekend. He told Sky Sports: "It's disappointing because we're 1-0 ahead at the end but over the course of the game a point is about right and I'm not sure if we did enough to win it. A really fighting performance from us, we improved a lo

Premier League: Man United are now a point from the Champions League

Image
AFC Bournemouth 0 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United are now only a point from the Champions League after Casemiro's stunning overhead kick edged Manchester United a massive step closer.  In a match that was clear-cut opportunities, a piece of magic from Casemiro proved the difference. The midfielder picked up a beautiful pass from Christian Eriksen and turned away from Marcos Senesi before acrobatically hammering home. As was the case against Wolves last week , United lacked urgency against Bournemouth with Dominic Solanke twice going close and David Brooks forcing a fingertip save from De Gea. They were without their top goal scorer this season, Marcus Rashford , and struggled to mount a serious threat for much of the time after their goal.  Wout Weghorst almost scored late on. His strike was punched away by the Bournemouth keeper and kept the score at 1-0. Bruno Fernandes also nearly scoed before that. They managed to see the game out though, and thanks to Liverpoo

Premier League: Title race will go to final day

Image
Manchester United 0 - 1 Arsenal Arsenal ensured the title race will go to the final day with victory over a depleted Manchester United side at Old Trafford. The Gunners display was often unconvincing here but they got the job done. Their manager will be pleased with how they have kept the pressure on Manchester Citty. The only goal of the game came when Leandro Trossard struck after 20 minutes. Lazy defending from struggling veteran Casemiro played Kai Havertz onside, his cross was then turned in by the Belgian at the near post. Manchester United showed plenty of effort and endeavor. However, they suffered from a glaring lack of quality. The Red Devils never seriously tested Arsenal keeper David Raya, as their own hopes of European football next season faded further.  It's looking increasingly likely that they will only qualify for Europe if they beat Manchester City in the upcoming Fa Cup final. What impact will this have on the title race? Arsenal must now hope north London

Ten Hag took the bold decision to drop captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo and was rewarded with a performance that lifted the mood of crisis around Manchester United and leave Liverpool still searching for a first win of the season. Jadon Sancho showed superb control and composure to deservedly put United in front after 16 minutes before Marcus Rashford raced clear to beat Alisson from substitute Anthony Martial's pass eight minutes after the interval. Mo Salah set up a tense finish when he scrambled in a header with nine minutes left but United survive

Premier League: Man United end campaign with a win

Image
Brighton & Hove Albion 0 - 2 Manchester United Rasmus Hojlund and Diogo Dalot helped Manchester United  conclude  their league campaign with a 2-0 victory over Brighton. Despite the win, Erik ten Hag's side finished the campaign in eighth place – their lowest top-flight position since 1989-90. Brighton, on the other hand, couldn't provide the perfect send-off for departing boss Roberto De Zerbi, despite having better chances and dominating possession. Adam Webster and Joao Pedro came closest to putting the Seagulls ahead in the first half, but neither had the clinical edge to beat Andre Onana. Brighton  were  left ruing missed opportunities when Dalot slotted past Jason Steele in the 73rd  minute,  before substitute Hojlund secured the three points two minutes before the end of normal time. The Seagulls ended the season in 11th place, missing out on the top half by a single point. Manchester United entered the final day knowing they needed a better result than Newcast

UCL: Man United's struggles continue

Image
Manchester United 2 - 3 Galatasaray  Manchester United have endured a tough run of form this season.  It took a turn for the worse  as they suffered a defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League at Old Trafford. Mauro Icardi delivered a crucial blow in the 81st minute, securing the Turkish giants their historic first-ever victory on English soil. Despite missing an earlier penalty opportunity to put the visitors in front at Old Trafford, Icardi showed his clinical side by capitalizing on Davinson Sanchez's header, lofting a shot past United's goalkeeper Andre Onana. This marked United's sixth loss in 10 games this season, with the team now facing its second defeat in the opening two matches of Group A in the Champions League. Adding to the woes of their manager, Erik ten Hag, his team had twice taken the lead thanks to goals from Rasmus Hojlund in both halves. On both occasions, Galatasaray responded swiftly to level the score. Furthermore, the situation escalated when

EFL Cup: Manchester United win at Wembley

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 Newcastle United Newcastle United's long wait for a trophy goes on as they lost the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United. Casemiro’s header opened the scoring midway through the first half. Marcus Rashford then doubled Man United's lead with a shot that took a deflection off Newcastle's Sven Botman. Eddie Howe knew he had to go for it at the start of the second half.  He introduced Alexander Isak up front alongside Callum Wilson. However, it ultimately had very little impact. The reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius's heroics.  Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as United manager and there could be more success and trophies coming up for his side. Premier League: Controversial penalty wins it for West Ham

West Ham United 2 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United will be wondering how they have lost this game. Jarrod Bowen scored a penalty in injury time to condemn The Red Devils to a 2-1 defeat. Author - Olivia T A closer look at what happened at the London Stadium That late penalty from Jarrod Bowen handed Manchester United a 2-1 defeat in the Premier League, easing the pressure on West Ham’s manager, Julen Lopetegui. Casemiro had briefly revived United’s hopes of taking a point, heading in with less than ten minutes to go to cancel out Crysencio Summerville’s 74th-minute goal.  Controversy struck with just three minutes remaining when referee David Coote was called to the pitchside monitor by the Video Assistant Referee to review Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings in the box. Despite protests from United’s players, who claimed a handball by Ings, Coote awarded the penalty, and Bowen kept his cool to slot the ball past André Onana. Click here for more Premier League news

UCL: PSG will take narrow advantage into second leg

Image
Paris Saint Germain 1 - 0  Real Madrid Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning stoppage-time goal as Paris St-Germain beat Real Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 tie. The France striker, linked with a move to Real in the summer, received the ball on the left from a clever backheel by Neymar, and got between two defenders inside the box before slotting through Thibaut Courtois' legs to send the Parc des Princes crazy. It was a dramatic finish to a game that had looked set to end in frustration for PSG. This was all after Lionel Messi saw his penalty saved just after the hour mark. The successful strike was Mbappe's 22nd in another incredible season for the youngster. His performance will surely have only served to enhance Real's desire for him to be leading their line next term. Crystal Palace: 23/24 Season Review

Image
It's time to explore Crystal Palace's 2023/2024 season. It marked Crystal Palace's 118th season and their eleventh consecutive campaign in the Premier League. They also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. It was the first season since 2013–14 without Wilfried Zaha, who departed for Turkish club Galatasaray in the summer, and Scottish midfielder James McArthur, who retired. As a result, Joel Ward was appointed club captain at the beginning of the season, replacing the departed Luka Milivojević. Despite being 15th and just 5 points above the relegation zone in mid-February, the appointment of Oliver Glasner revived the team's fortunes, and a strong finish saw the Eagles equal their highest league finish in the Premier League era. Let's examine some of the moments from another interesting year at Selhurst Park. In September, they were knocked out of the EFL Cup by Manchester United. They were beaten 3-0, and many fans criticised the weakened squad put out.  Un

The result means Erik ten Hag's side has reached their second domestic final of the season. In a scrappy semi-final, both goalkeepers excelled with David de Gea making several fine saves and Brighton's Robert Sanchez brilliantly turning away Marcus Rashford's deflected effort in extra time. Manchester United 5 - 2 Leicester City  Ruud van Nistelrooy began his tenure as Manchester United’s interim manager on a high, with his team cruising past Leicester to secure a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Author - Olivia T Just two days after stepping in following Erik ten Hag's dismissal , Van Nistelrooy’s call for an exciting performance was more than delivered by his players. Casemiro got the party started with a stunning long-range strike and went on to score again before half-time. After an initial header rattled off both posts, the Brazilian reacted quickly to slot the ball in from eight yards out. Alejandro Garnacho contributed his fifth goal of the season , and captain Bruno Fernandes had a bit of luck with his free-kick, which deflected off Leicester’s James Justin and into the net. Defensively, United weren’t flawless. Some familiar issues allowed Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady to pull goals back for Leicester before the break. Coady’s finish, a firs

Rosenborg 1 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United got the 2024/25 pre-season campaign underway as they were beaten 1-0 by Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway. Erik ten Hag opted to select a different outfield line-up for each half at the Lerkendal Stadium, with 21 players in total getting valuable minutes in their legs after the summer. Radek Vitek was the star performer for The Red Devils as he made a multitude of spectacular saves to prevent the home side from scoring before Noah Holm struck with almost the last kick of the game. Ethan Wheatley and Ethan Ennis had the best opportunities for United, while the likes of Casemiro, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford were afforded time on the pitch seven weeks on from the FA Cup final.
