World Cup: England send Wales home

Image
Wales 0-3 England Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden star for England Rashford and Foden capitalised on their starting roles to help England knock Wales out of the World Cup with a 3-0 win which also secured the top spot in Group B, setting up a last-16 tie with Senegal. England boss Gareth Southgate had been criticised since the disappointing goalless draw with USA about Foden's lack of game time in the tournament so far and the Manchester City forward showed what he can bring to this stage at the start of the second half. After a dull first 45 minutes, any hope Wales had of qualifying for the last 16 was wiped out as England scored twice within six minutes of the restart. Rashford fired a free-kick past Danny Ward following Ethan Ampadu's foul on Phil Foden after 50 minutes, with the Manchester City midfielder then marking his return to England's team moments later by turning in Harry Kane's cross at the far post. Wales were outclassed as they knew they were on the way

EFL: Bristol Rovers win promotion after dramatic final day

Image
Bristol Rovers 7 - 0 Scunthorpe Bristol Rovers pulled off a remarkable 7-0 win over Scunthorpe to seal promotion back to League One. On a day of drama, the basic task ahead for Bristol Rovers was to get a better result than Northampton, who were away at Barrow. Very few thought it would come like this. This is what happened. This is a slightly altered and condensed version of the report that's available on the Bristol Rovers website. Read that here.  Aaron Collins was the first to threaten but went to ground a little easily in the area and referee Breakspear waved away his protests, before first Sam Finley and then Trevor Clarke let fly with long-range efforts, both of which were off target. It was one-way Gas traffic for the first 10 minutes, but without a shot on target to trouble the 17-year-old Iron goalkeeper Watson. A promising move in the 14th minute was curtailed by the offside flag as Luke Thomas played a neat one-two with Sam Finlay, captaining the side in the absence

Portugal 0 - 0 Slovenia Portugal won 3-0 on penalties Cristiano Ronaldo's tears turned to joy as Portugal triumphed over Slovenia on penalties to secure a Euro 2024 quarter-final spot against France, despite the 39-year-old missing a crucial penalty in extra time. Ronaldo, who was in tears after Jan Oblak's brilliant save of his penalty in the 105th minute, was consoled by his teammates. Following a gruelling goalless draw, he successfully converted Portugal's first effort in the shootout. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa's saves from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec, and Benjamin Verbic were instrumental in the victory. Costa's heroics paved the way for Bernardo Silva to score the winning penalty after Bruno Fernandes had also found the net. This came after a similarly crucial save from Benjamin Sesko deep into extra time, as Slovenia came heartbreakingly close to a historic upset. Viva Ronaldo As always, Ronaldo took centre stage in this unforgettable match, though his wai

Elliott Lee then doubled the lead with a neat finish from 20 yards out, following a powerful drive from Ryan Barnett. Wrexham’s defence also impressed in this early-season clash. At the other end, a high clearance from Aristote Nsiala led to goalkeeper Toby Savin racing out of his area, but Jack Marriott seized the chance and scored with ease. Pre Season: Forest ease to win over Chesterfield

Image
Chesterfield 0 - 3 Nottingham Forest  Nottingham Forest kicked off their pre-season with a 3-0 win against Chesterfield, courtesy of goals from Chris Wood, Josh Bowler, and Ibrahim Sangare. The visitors could have taken a 3-0 lead within the first 15 minutes, having created a trio of excellent chances. Emmanuel Dennis and Anthony Elanga both forced saves from Chesterfield's goalkeeper, Ryan Boot, while Nicolas Dominguez hit the post with a shot from the edge of the area. Forest believed they had taken the lead just before the half-hour mark, but Dennis was adjudged to have fouled Boot when heading in a free-kick, and the goal was disallowed. Despite creating several more chances, including efforts from Ryan Yates and Elanga, they couldn't find a way past Boot before half-time. Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo made wholesale changes during the break, replacing all ten outfield players and switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation from the first half's back-three. The changes paid

Manchester United: 23/24 Season Review

There was a lot of controversy throughout, but it finished with glory as they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.  After being eliminated from the EFL Cup in the fourth round by the previous season's finalists, Newcastle United, they also experienced their worst performance in the Champions League group stage. The season started with a 1-0 win over Wolves. In this match, Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory. It wasn't a great performance though and perhaps a sign of things to come. A few weeks later, they lost 3 - 1 at home to Brighton. After this match, we spoke to Liam, a United Season Ticket holder. Reo Hatate added a second goal before halftime, and Alistair Johnston completed the scoring in the second half, following a strong performance from Nicolas Kuhn. Despite the ongoing transfer saga involving Matt O'Riley, who is close to joining Brighton, Celtic's midfield performed exceptionally well. Paulo Bernardo stepped in for O'Riley, but it was the established players, McGregor and Hatate, who led the charge. Hatate was particularly impressive, creating five chances and showcasing his ability to fill the void left by O'Riley. St Mirren struggled to break through Celtic's relentless pressing and managed only one shot in the first half. Although they showed some impr

Premier League; Chelsea ease to first win of the season

Image
Chelsea 3 - 0 Luton Town From a Chelsea perspective, the big team news before kick-off was the presence of Moises Caicedo in the starting line-up for his full debut. He replaced the injured Carney Chukwuemeka. As expected before the match, Chelsea dominated possession throughout the game. It didn’t take long for the Blues to find a way past the defence and force the first save. A loose ball followed a set-piece dropped toward Sterling but his fierce volley was well held by Thomas Kaminski. It wasn't long before Raheem Sterling gave Chelsea a deserved lead, weaving his way through the Hatters defence to score a fine solo goal. The Blues had to be patient before securing the emphatic scoreline that the home side's dominance deserved. This began with Sterling netting his second after half-time by turning in Malo Gusto's low cross. Jackson then scored Chelsea's third goal via a similar route, Sterling providing the ball for him to slide in. Ultimately, this proved to
