Inter take huge step to Champions League semi-finals

Image
Bayern Munich 1 - 2 Inter Milan Inter Milan secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena. Author - Matt F Stadium - Allianz Arena The German side dominated the early stages, with England captain Harry Kane striking the post in the first half. However, it was Inter who broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. Marcus Thuram displayed exceptional skill to flick the ball into the path of Lautaro Martínez, who finished emphatically into the roof of the net with the outside of his boot. Bayern responded in the 85th minute through veteran forward Thomas Müller, who announced last week that he will leave the club this summer after a 25-year association. Müller converted from close range following a low cross from Konrad Laimer. Inter had the final say just three minutes later. A swift counter-attack culminated in Carlos Augusto delivering a precise cross, which substitute Davide Frattesi turned in from close ra...

Harry Kane finally lifts a trophy

Bayern Munich 2 - 0 Borussia Mönchengladbach Bayern Munich came out victorious on their final home match of the season to crown their title celebrations.  Author - Ed Stadium - Allianz Arena Harry Kane put Bayern in front after the half-hour and Michael Olise rounded off the scoreline in the closing stages.  A closer look at what happened in the 90 minutes  Bayern saw more of the ball in the early stages, but it was Manuel Neuer who found himself the busier of the two goalkeepers. Back in the side, he reacted sharply to deny Stefan Lainer, before a clever chip from Kimmich narrowly missed picking out Guerreiro at the other end. Neuer was called into action again when a corner took an awkward deflection off Eric Dier, producing another solid stop. Munich began to apply more sustained pressure. Coman dragged a shot wide and Kimmich tested the keeper from distance. Then came the breakthrough. Michael Olise weaved past two defenders and struck from range, with Harry Kane ap...

UCL: Bayern end Arsenal's quest for Champions League glory

Joshua Kimmich's commanding header in the 63rd minute, off Raphael Guerreiro's cross, sealed the Germans' path to the semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate win, following a 2-2 draw in London in the first leg. Despite hosting the first leg at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal were optimistic about progressing against a Bayern Munich squad that had struggled in their domestic campaign and were missing key players Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman due to injuries. In a tense second leg, observed by Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke, Gabriel Martinelli had the best opportunity of the first half for the Gunners but failed to beat Manuel Neuer, who made a crucial save after Jamal Musiala's earlier attempt. UCL: Bayern and United play out a classic

Image
Bayern Munich 4 - 3 Manchester United Bayern Munich and Manchester United played out a classic Champions League encounter in Munich. Harry Kane was heavily involved.  This was not Kane's best game, with him floating in and out of it, but he did what was required. From the archives: Do you remember when Bolton were in Europe

Image
Looking at the tables of the English Football League in recent seasons, it's really hard to believe that Bolton Wanderers were once playing in European competition. The match itself Because Bolton were actually in a relegation battle at the time, Gary Megson selected a weakened side for the match. This was how they lined up: Bolton: Al Habsi, Andrew O'Brien, Cid, Michalik, Gardner, Alonso (Giannakopoulos 56), Nolan, Guthrie, McCann, Braaten (Teymourian 77), Davies. Bolton shocked the German giants eight minutes into the game. Ricardo Gardner's effort was deflected past the iconic Oliver Kahn to give them an unlikely lead. It was Gardner's first goal in almost five years. As expected, Bayern eventually upped their game, with Lucas Podolski, Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger terrorising the Bolton defence. 30 minutes into the game, Bayern were level as Podolski beat Al-Habsi with a driven shot. Just four minutes into the second half, Podolski scored his s...

Shortly after, Jamal Musiala unleashed a powerful shot that almost broke both Angus Gunn’s net and the hearts of the stunned Scottish fans behind the goal. Before half-time, Kai Havertz made it three from the penalty spot, following Ryan Porteous’ red card which left Scotland facing an uphill battle. Substitute Niclas Fullkrug added a fourth for Germany with a high shot into the net, though Antonio Rudiger’s late deflected own goal offered a glimmer of hope for Scotland. Their joy was short-lived, however, as Emre Can silenced the Scottish supporters deep into injury time. This result marked the biggest win in the opening game of a European Championships. ...
