It was Michael Olise who opened the scoring after 27 minutes, lashing a fierce strike into the far corner after a loose ball fell his way. Serge Gnabry, outstanding throughout, was central to Bayern’s second five minutes later, threading a pass for Luis Díaz to hammer in off the underside of the bar for his first Bundesliga goal since arriving from Liverpool.
Just before half-time, Gnabry again tormented Leipzig, feinting to shoot before slipping the ball to Olise, who powered home his second. Kane then took over after the interval, beginning with a neat finish from a counter-attack on 64 minutes.

Leipzig briefly thought they had a way back through Antonio Nusa, but his strike was ruled out after a free-kick in the build-up had been taken with the ball still rolling. Bayern responded ruthlessly. Kane curled in a precise effort from the edge of the box to make it 5-0 before completing his treble in the 77th minute, left unmarked to slide home against a defence that had long since unravelled.
Analysis | Bayern underline their dominance
Vincent Kompany’s side issued an emphatic statement on opening night, overwhelming Leipzig in every department. Bayern’s wide play was particularly effective, with Olise and Konrad Laimer combining fluently on the right and stretching the visitors’ back line to breaking point.
Kane, often dropping deep to link play, showed his sharpness in front of goal with three expertly taken finishes. Behind him, Gnabry and Joshua Kimmich dictated the tempo, exploiting Leipzig’s careless passing and lack of defensive organisation.
For Leipzig, under new manager Ole Werner, this was a chastening evening. Their back four could not contain Bayern’s relentless movement and energy, and even with greater numbers in defence it is doubtful they would have stemmed the tide. A work in progress they may be, but on this evidence Bayern remain as ruthless and relentless as ever.
