The National League’s top two sides had amassed a combined 212 points going into this final-day meeting, with York knowing they simply needed to avoid defeat to secure promotion to League Two.

It appeared Emmanuel Dieseruwe had written himself into Rochdale folklore, rising at the back post to head home in the fifth minute of added time.

The cross into the box was amazing and there was absolute mayhem all over the ground. Supporters spilled on to the pitch in celebration, convinced they had witnessed a promotion-winning moment.

After a lengthy delay, play eventually resumed and York committed everyone forward. From the ensuing scramble, Josh Stones drove the ball goalwards.

A defender produced a desperate block on the line, but the assistant referee signalled that the ball had crossed, sparking scenes of disbelief and jubilation in equal measure.

A closer analysis of what happened

York created the clearer openings across the contest, with Rochdale indebted to goalkeeper Oliver Whatmuff for a string of sharp saves.

The hosts began brightly and believed they had taken the lead inside eight minutes when Dan Moss met a cross from the right, bundling both the ball and York goalkeeper Harrison Male into the net. Referee Will Finnie, however, had already blown for a foul.

It took 14 minutes for the first attempt of note, Luke Hannant curling a right-footed effort comfortably wide from the edge of the area.

York were handed a free-kick in the 37th minute after Whatmuff handled outside his box, but Ben Brookes opted to shoot from a tight angle and sent his effort wildly off target, drawing ironic cheers from the home support.

The first genuine chance arrived three minutes after the restart when Hiram Boateng slipped Josh Stones through, only for the forward to shoot straight at Whatmuff from an angle. Moments later, Moss responded at the other end, flashing an effort narrowly wide.

York continued to threaten on the counter, Boateng again releasing Stones, but once more the goalkeeper stood firm.

Rochdale were given a free-kick on the edge of the area in the 72nd minute after Emmanuel Dieseruwe was brought down. Substitute Aidan Barlow stepped up but lifted his attempt over the bar.

As the clock ticked down, Ollie Pearce robbed Ethan Ebanks-Landell and fed Stones, whose deflected strike was superbly clawed away by Whatmuff.

Dieseruwe later strained to reach a cross from the left but could not quite connect, while York should have settled matters in the 90th minute when Greg Olley was denied from point-blank range by the inspired Whatmuff.

Two minutes into added time, Rochdale came agonisingly close to the goal they needed, Callum Howe heading against his own crossbar from a corner.

York City’s decade-long absence from the Football League, which included five seasons in National League North, is now over.

Rochdale, meanwhile, must regroup quickly ahead of the play-offs. They return to the Crown Oil Arena for a home semi-final next Sunday against either Scunthorpe or Southend.
