Transfer News | Trent moves to Real Madrid

Liverpool sources suggest the Spanish club has paid €10m (£8.4m) in a single up-front payment, although figures close to Madrid claim the fee is lower. The payment allows Alexander-Arnold to complete his move in time to feature in the expanded Club World Cup next month.

The 26-year-old England international had been due to leave Anfield on a free transfer when his contract expired on 30 June, but had already made clear his intention to depart this summer. He has now signed a six-year deal with Madrid that includes a €1bn (£840m) buy-out clause.

Fifa has approved a special transfer window from 1 to 10 June for clubs competing in the month-long Club World Cup, which begins on 14 June in the United States.

Madrid begin their campaign against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on 18 June in Miami. Before then, Alexander-Arnold could add to his 33 England caps, having been called up for a World Cup qualifier against Andorra on 7 June and a friendly against Senegal three days later.

Just hours after confirming Alexander-Arnold’s departure, Liverpool completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for €35m (£29.5m).

Why Real Madrid signed the player early | Club World Cup ambition and Alonso’s new era

Real Madrid have moved swiftly to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of schedule as they seek to strengthen their squad following a disappointing season. The Spanish club, who also confirmed the £50m arrival of Spain international Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth on 1 June, are aiming to bounce back after failing to win a major domestic or European trophy for the first time in three years.

The early signings come as Real prepare for the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, where the financial stakes are high. The tournament winner could earn as much as £97m in prize money, adding a strong commercial incentive to go alongside sporting ambition.

Alexander-Arnold’s early arrival also allows him to begin work immediately under new manager Xabi Alonso, who has replaced Carlo Ancelotti at the BernabĂ©u. The opportunity to integrate into Alonso’s system ahead of a busy summer fixture list is viewed as a key advantage.

For Alexander-Arnold, the move marks the end of a long association with Liverpool, the club he joined at the age of six. During his time at Anfield, he won the Premier League twice, as well as lifting the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and League Cup.

The decision to fast-track the transfer reflects Real Madrid’s intent to build a new era of success, beginning with a strong showing on the global stage in the United States this June.
