Sean Dyche made seven changes from the side that drew with Manchester United on Saturday, and while Forest created plenty of chances, they could not find a breakthrough.

Captain Gibbs-White was handed a golden opportunity to put his side ahead ten minutes before the break after Emanuel Aiwu handled in the area. However, his tame spot-kick was comfortably saved by Oliver Christensen, diving low to his left, with Ryan Yates unable to convert the rebound.

James McAtee came closest earlier on, steering narrowly wide after a well-worked free-kick routine, while Yates later saw a header cleared off the line by Arjan Malic following a Nikola Milenkovic flick-on.

Forest struck the woodwork late on when Nicolas Dominguez’s deflected drive clipped the crossbar, summing up their frustrating evening.

Sturm Graz had briefly thought they had gone ahead in the first half when Maurice Malone turned in after John Victor’s spill, only for the flag to go up for offside.

The result leaves Forest 18th on five points, with Sturm Graz one point behind in 23rd.

New signings fail to seize their chance

Pre match atmosphere

With Igor Jesus suspended and Chris Wood sidelined through injury, Arnaud Kalimuendo made his first start for Nottingham Forest since arriving from Rennes for a reported £26m in the summer.

The French striker’s first real involvement came ten minutes in when he chose to lay the ball off to James McAtee rather than turn and shoot, a decision that came to nothing. Kalimuendo managed just seven touches in the opening half, despite Forest controlling 55% of possession.

He was later played through by Neco Williams with a defence-splitting pass, but hesitation in front of goal betrayed his lack of recent match sharpness.

Sean Dyche also handed McAtee another opportunity to impress, though the former Manchester City midfielder endured a frustrating evening. He should have opened the scoring inside ten minutes but dragged his shot narrowly wide.

There were flashes of promise from McAtee, but a 70% pass completion rate summed up a subdued display from both of Forest’s summer recruits.
