Goals from captain Ryan Yates, Arnaud Kalimuendo and Nikola Milenkovic completed a routine victory in a fixture that echoed the 1979 European Cup final, when Forest overcame the Swedish champions.

It marked a third straight win for Forest, their best run since the turn of the year. A slump in form during the latter half of last season explains why they find themselves in the Europa League rather than the Champions League.

Nuno Espirito Santo departed the club after clashing with global sporting director Edu and owner Evangelos Marinakis, while Ange Postecoglou lasted only 39 days in the aftermath.

Saturday’s 3-0 win at a struggling Liverpool moved Forest out of the Premier League relegation zone. Their latest success at the City Ground has lifted them to 16th in the Europa League standings and on course for the play-offs to reach the last 16.

The hosts rarely looked troubled. Yates set them on their way with a composed first half finish, and both Kalimuendo and Milenkovic went close to doubling the lead.

Kalimuendo did break through just before half-time, turning in the rebound after Yates’ header was saved, his first goal since a £26m summer switch from Rennes.

Milenkovic struck from close range soon after the restart, and Callum Hudson-Odoi rattled the bar as Forest threatened to add further gloss to the scoreline.

The heroes of 1979 were in attendance

Some footballing legends have a picture together

Nottingham Forest welcomed the heroes of 1979 before kick-off, with members of both Forest and Malmo’s original line-ups reunited 46 years after that first European Cup triumph.

The side that went on to retain the trophy a year later, and cement their place in club history, gathered at the City Ground to watch the class of 2025–26. What followed was among the most straightforward victories Sean Dyche’s team are likely to enjoy this season.

The Europa League was a clear target at the start of the campaign and, after a turbulent spell, Forest now look settled under Dyche in both domestic and European competition, and for the first time this season, they appear to have found genuine momentum.
