Russell Martin was dismissed after 17 games on 5 October, with Rangers subsequently holding unproductive talks with former manager Steven Gerrard, Rohl and ex-Ibrox defender Kevin Muscat.
Negotiations with Muscat, who is close to winning the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Port, broke down, reopening the door for Rohl. He has now signed an initial two-and-a-half-year contract.
Why has it taken so long?
Rohl managed Sheffield Wednesday from October 2023 until July 2025, having previously held coaching roles with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team.
Gerrard withdrew from consideration last weekend, citing that the timing was not right for a return to Ibrox. Rohl later also pulled out, prompting advanced talks with Muscat. Delays to Muscat’s potential start made the deal unworkable.

Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh acknowledged the difficulties the club has faced during the drawn-out search for a manager, which drew criticism from supporters, but said he believes Rohl can "restore pride and ultimately success".
Rohl, who left Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in the summer, twice avoided relegation with the struggling South Yorkshire club and secured a 12th-place finish in the Championship in his only full season in charge, an impressive feat given the club’s financial constraints.
Can he save their season?
Rangers sit eight points behind struggling Celtic and 13 behind Hearts. The club also failed to reach the Champions League under Martin and lost both of their Europa League matches.
Rohl has assured Rangers supporters that he is ready to meet the expectations of fans who have seen Celtic dominate Scottish football, claiming 12 titles in 13 years.
"The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I set high standards for myself and the team too," he said.
"Rangers is built on a tradition of hard work, unity and success. That is exactly what you will get from me and what I want my team to represent for all of you.
"I'm looking forward to meeting the squad and getting down to work ahead of Thursday's game away to Brann."
