Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens

The deal is said to be worth an initial 21m euros (£18.1m) plus add-ons.

Who is Senne Lammens?

Lammens moved to Antwerp on a free transfer from Club Brugge in 2023 and has since made 64 appearances, lifting the Belgian Super Cup in his first season.

The Belgian youth international has yet to win a senior cap, though he received his first call-up in March 2025 and is widely viewed as the natural successor to Thibaut Courtois.

He featured 30 times in the Belgian Pro League last season, recording seven clean sheets. His recent absence from Antwerp’s squad for consecutive matches against KV Mechelen and KVC Westerlo came as speculation over his future intensified.

How did United get here?

Rúben Amorim began the season with uncertainty over his preferred goalkeeper.

Altay Bayindir’s mistake against Arsenal on the opening weekend only heightened the issue, and despite keeping his place for all three Premier League games so far, another costly error against Burnley on Saturday increased the urgency to recruit a replacement.

Andre Onana, United’s first-choice last season, has endured a turbulent spell since his £47.2m move from Inter Milan in 2023. His only outing this term came in the League Cup defeat last week, where he saved just one of 12 penalties in the shootout.

The reasons why United went for Lammens over Martinez

United were also considering a move for Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez, but ultimately settled on Lammens. Some journalists believe that Jadon Sancho's reluctance to make a permanent move to Villa played a role in this decision. The former Dortmund playmaker has since joined Villa on an initial season-long loan deal.

United were hopeful of securing the sale of Sancho, who is due to become a free agent next summer. Martinez's £200,000-a-week wages were also seen as something of a stumbling block
