Liverpool start title defence with a win

Liverpool left it late to begin the defence of their Premier League title with a win over Bournemouth on an emotional evening. It wasn't all perfect for Liverpool but, as they did so often last season, they got the job done. You can read the Bournemouth reaction here. The away side have plenty to be positive about.

Newcastle United held by 10-man Aston Villa

On Saturday morning, Newcastle United were left frustrated without wantaway striker Alexander Isak as they were held to a draw by 10-man Aston Villa.

Villa played the final 24 minutes plus stoppage time a man down after Ezri Konsa was sent off, yet the Magpies could not make their advantage count in Isak’s absence, with the forward continuing to push for a move to Liverpool. 

Spurs too good for newly promoted Burnley

This was also going to be a difficult game for Scott Parker's side but they will have been disappointed with the manner of this defeat

Spurs fans and their manager would have been delighted with the win and the performance that went with it. Richarlison struck twice, including a spectacular scissor kick, as Thomas Frank marked his first Premier League match in charge of Tottenham with a convincing win. The Brazilian forward managed only four league goals last season but was outstanding here, rediscovering the form that persuaded Spurs to pay £60m to prise him from Everton three years ago.

A memorable return to the Premier League for Sunderland

Sunderland made a winning start to their first Premier League campaign since 2016-17 as they deservedly beat West Ham. The two teams were welcomed by a cauldron of noise before Sunderland's first top-flight game in eight years, The Sunderland put on a fantastic show for those home fans who will believe they can have a positive campaign. For West Ham, it already has the makings of a difficult season.

Man City ease to comfortable win over Wolves

Erling Haaland struck twice and Tijjani Reijnders impressed on his Premier League debut as City opened the season with a win over Wolves. Reijnders, signed from Milan in the summer, played a central role in three of City’s goals and underlined his potential as a dynamic presence in midfield.

Man United fans positive despite opening day defeat

Manchester United fans have been responding to their defeat against Arsenal with positivity. Riccardo Calafiori's first-half header gave Arsenal the three points on what felt like a much improved performance from United.

Leeds United battle to win over Everton

Leeds United marked their Premier League return with victory as Lukas Nmecha’s late penalty sealed a deserved win over Everton at Elland Road.

Daniel Farke’s side were in control for long spells but appeared destined for only a point until James Tarkowski handled Anton Stach’s strike six minutes from time. Nmecha stepped up with composure, firing past Jordan Pickford to spark wild celebrations in a typically fervent Yorkshire crowd.
