Unai Emery had been keen to address a shortage of cover at centre-back and right-back, and the 30-year-old’s versatility across the back line is expected to prove valuable over the course of the campaign.
Lindelof is Villa’s fourth signing of the 2025 summer transfer window, after Zepiqueno Redmond from PSV Eindhoven, Marco Bizot from Brest and Evann Guessand from Nice.
A closer look at the defender's career so far
Lindelöf began his career in his homeland with Västerås SK, making his senior debut in October 2009. Two years later he agreed a move to Benfica, where he initially featured for the club’s youth and B teams.
He made his first-team breakthrough in September 2013 and went on to win three Primeira Liga titles in Lisbon, while continuing to gain experience at B level. In July 2017 he joined Manchester United, lifting the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup the following year.

One Villa fan told European Super Football: “As a rotation option, I think this is actually a decent signing for us. We need experience if we are going to get through this bad run, we will need that.”

Another fan added: “Desperation. What on earth is going with this club now. We were in a good position twelve months ago. Now, we’re a shambles.”
A statement on the Aston Villa website reads: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Victor Lindelöf. The Sweden international captain, who has been capped 71 times by his country, joins the club following his departure from Manchester United at the end of last season.
“An experienced and versatile operator across the back line, Lindelöf spent eight years at Old Trafford, winning both the League Cup and the FA Cup. He had previously lifted silverware with Benfica in Portugal, after starting his career in his native Sweden.”
