Before a ball was kicked this weekend, media outlets including European Super Football brought you the news that Graham Potter had been sacked as West Ham United manager.

The biggest talking points

United slip to defeat against Brentford

The pressure builds again on the Manchester United boss as they lost 3-1 at Brentford. Igor Thiago struck twice inside the opening 20 minutes, punishing slack United defending to put the hosts firmly in control. Benjamin Sesko halved the deficit with his first goal since his £74m summer switch from RB Leipzig, offering the visitors hope of a comeback. That hope grew when Brentford captain Nathan Collins hauled down Bryan Mbeumo in the box, handing Fernandes the chance to level. After a lengthy stoppage, including a VAR red card check and two Brentford substitutions, the United captain’s low strike was superbly saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brentford sealed victory in stoppage time when Mathias Jensen powered a shot past Altay Bayindir from the edge of the area. The result leaves Amorim still searching for back-to-back league wins almost a year into his reign at Old Trafford.

Nketiah strikes at the death to topple Liverpool

Eddie Nketiah struck with virtually the last kick of the game at Selhurst Park to give Crystal Palace a richly deserved victory and halt Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season.

Federico Chiesa’s 87th-minute equaliser had appeared to rescue a point for the champions after a performance that scarcely warranted reward. But Nketiah pounced at the far post in the seventh minute of added time, lifting Palace to second in the table. Check out some of the scenes at Selhurst Park after the home side scored the late winner.

Man City thrash Burnley as Haaland scores twice

Pep Guardiola's side were questioned after losing back-to-back games in August, but have responded by winning three and drawing one to return to form and climbing up the table.

They were given a huge helping hand by French defender Esteve, who scored the first of his unfortunate double by miscuing an attempted clearance into his own net, the goal coming after Jeremy Doku's low effort was pushed out by Martin Dubravka. Erling Haaland scored twice late on to give the scoreline a more commanding touch.

Leeds pegged back by Bournemouth in stoppage time

This was another decent result for Bournemouth. Antoine Semenyo had put the visitors ahead in the first half with his fourth goal of the campaign, a free-kick from the edge of the box that flew past Karl Darlow. Leeds levelled swiftly as Joe Rodon climbed to meet Sean Longstaff’s corner, his header deflecting beyond Djordje Petrovic.

Longstaff then produced a fine volley early in the second half to turn the match in Leeds’ favour. The hosts defended stoutly as Bournemouth pressed but were denied the win when Kroupi volleyed in during added time.

Sunderland's impressive start to the season continues

Omar Alderete's first-half goal gave Sunderland the victory as Ange Postecoglou's difficult start to life as Nottingham Forest head coach carries on.

Aston Villa get their first league win of the season

Ollie Watkins ended his barren spell as Aston Villa fought back to beat Fulham and claim their first Premier League win of the season. The England forward had gone nine games without a goal, equalling the longest drought of his Villa career, but his first-half equaliser set the stage for the turnaround.

John McGinn and substitute Emi Buendia struck twice in as many minutes shortly after half-time, with the latter scoring his first Villa goal in over a year to put the result beyond Fulham.

Gabriel scores late winner to secure dramatic victory over Newcastle.

The defender rose to meet Martin Ødegaard’s corner, sending manager Mikel Arteta into celebration on the touchline.

Mikel Merino's glancing header off the post in the 84th minute had cancelled out Nick Woltemade's Newcastle opener in what had appeared like it was going to be a missed opportunity following Liverpool’s defeat to Crystal Palace earlier in the weekend. They now sit only two points behind the league leaders.
