Diaz, who joined Vincent Kompany’s side from Liverpool this summer for £65.5m on a four-year contract, headed home from Serge Gnabry’s cross in the 77th minute to double Bayern’s lead. Kane had opened the scoring in the first half, capitalising on a poor clearance to slide the ball into the bottom corner.
Jamie Leweling pulled one back for German Cup winners Stuttgart in the 93rd minute, but it was little more than a consolation as Bayern claimed their first trophy of the season. After his goal, Diaz paid tribute to his former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash in July, by replicating one of Jota’s celebrations.

Bayern have now lifted the season curtain-raiser a record 11 times, while Kane added a second piece of silverware in Germany after winning his first career trophy last season. The Bundesliga champions, who missed out on the title in 2024 for the first time in 11 years but triumphed under Kompany last season, will begin their league defence against RB Leipzig on 22 August.
Harry Kane celebrates another trophy
In a social media post, Harry Kane said: "Here we are, first one of the season. Oh, it feels good. It feels good. You know, not easy away from home but credit to the boys, we stepped up and we go again, we look forward to the next one."
A quick preview of Bayern's upcoming Bundesliga season
Bayern are once again the team to beat in Germany, widely expected to claim the Bundesliga title. Last season, no side came close to challenging them, and little suggests this will change in the current campaign. Securing a 35th league trophy appears almost inevitable, yet Vincent Kompany’s tenure could hinge on the club’s performances in Europe. A team of this calibre is expected to excel on all fronts, but whether their domestic dominance can be matched on the continental stage remains uncertain.
