This is manager Ruben Amorim's third signing of the summer after the arrivals of forward Matheus Cunha and left-back Diego Leon.

Mbeumo's move, seven weeks after United's first bid for the Cameroon international, brings to an end one of the longest-running sagas of the summer.

United's third offer, totaling an initial £65 million with £6 million in add-ons, was accepted last week.

Mbeumo's departure makes him Brentford's biggest ever sale, eclipsing the £40m paid by Al-Ahli for Ivan Toney last season.

Why were United so desperate to sign him?

Last season, Mbeumo, 25, scored 20 goals in the Premier League, ranking the fourth highest in the league, and provided an additional eight assists. Since Brentford's promotion to the top flight, Mbeumo has averaged an impressive 18 goal contributions per season.

He also has a shot conversion rate of 23.53%. In the Premier League, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Newcastle United's Alexander Isak were more clinical in front of goal.

He has also been praised at times for his work without the ball. In his final season at Brentford, Mbeumo won the ball back 32 times in the opposition third, ranking him third out of all Premier League players.

Where next for Brentford?

After a relatively successful period in the Premier League, Brentford fans might be a little bit concerned. The manager has gone, and a group of players who helped them develop into mainstays of the Premier League have now also gone. It will be interesting to see where they finish next season, but one fan that we spoke to is concerned that they might get dragged into a relegation fight.

Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's Director of Football, told the club's website: “Bryan’s goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him amongst the most productive players in England for the last three seasons. Bryan’s belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed that he was the perfect fit for Manchester United and the culture that we are developing."

Liam C, a Manchester United fan, told us: "We are slowly building a decent squad for next season. I think, if we sign a more 'traditional' striker alongside a new keeper, we have the makings of a side that can qualify the Champions League."
