The Belgian midfielder links up with Antonio Conte, who guided Napoli to the Serie A title last season. De Bruyne turned down an offer from Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire in order to remain in European competition and is set to feature in the Champions League next term.

His exit from City brings an end to a decade of service in which he won 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, after arriving from Wolfsburg in 2015.

Manchester City confirmed his departure before the season concluded, and he was given an emotional send-off at the Etihad Stadium following the final home game against Bournemouth. He made a brief appearance away at Fulham on the final weekend.

In Naples, De Bruyne joins a squad that includes former Premier League players Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour. Conte’s side edged a fiercely contested title race last season and will now aim to build on that success with the addition of one of Europe’s most decorated midfielders.

“He’s a Champions League-level signing, with Ballon d’Or quality,” said one fan of Italian football.

“With the slower pace of Serie A, he’ll have the time and space to dictate the game in a way that suits him perfectly. His passing range, vision and ability to control the tempo will give Napoli an extra dimension, particularly in tight European matches where composure is key. He’s not just a big name, he’s a player who can genuinely elevate the team in both domestic and continental competition.”

One City fan added on his Bluesky account: "I'm still sad that he's left but this is a great move for him. If he has success over there, he'll be treated like royalty."
