The Clarets extended their remarkable unbeaten run to 31 games, with Josh Brownhill netting twice in a composed performance that confirmed their top-two finish. Leeds, who had earlier dismantled Stoke City 6–0, were left celebrating in the Elland Road hospitality suite as news of Burnley’s result filtered through.
For Sheffield United, the result marked a fourth defeat in five matches – a dismal run that sees them finish third and now reliant on the play-offs if they are to join Burnley and Leeds in the Premier League next season.
Scott Parker's side have built their promotion push on defensive resilience, with this result breaking a club record that had stood for over a century. It is a campaign defined by consistency and resolve at the back.
Chris Wilder's Blades, meanwhile, must rediscover the form that saw them top the table at the end of March. There was, at least, a glimmer of positivity in Tom Cannon’s first goal for the club following his January move from Leicester City.
A closer look at what happened at Turf Moor
Needing a victory to secure promotion at the first attempt, Burnley delivered in front of a jubilant home crowd at Turf Moor. The celebrations extended to West Yorkshire, where Leeds players and staff gathered to watch events unfold following their emphatic earlier win.
Sheffield United had needed all three points to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive, and Wilder signalled intent by deploying a front two of Kieffer Moore and Cannon. They started brightly, with Harrison Burrows blazing over and Moore drawing a solid stop from James Trafforthe Burnley goalkeeper continuing a stellar campaign that includes 29 clean sheets.
The breakthrough came via Brownhill, who has been in prolific form from midfield. After Josh Cullen's fierce strike was parried by Michael Cooper, Brownhill was quickest to react, lashing the rebound high into the net.
United searched for a response but were repeatedly thwarted by the assured Trafford and the ever-reliable Maxime Esteve. Eventually, a moment of quality from Gustavo Hamer prised open the Clarets’ defence, this was only the 15th goal they have conceded in 44 league games.
Hamer’s incisive pass down the left channel found Cannon, who ended his 12-game goal drought with a sharp left-footed finish that left Trafford with no chance. Yet it proved only a consolation, as Burnley saw out the result to mark a triumphant return to the Premier League.
