Deep into stoppage time, Bournemouth were awarded a free-kick. With everyone, including their goalkeeper, pushed forward, Marcus Tavernier delivered a cross to an unmarked Evanilson at the near post. The club’s record signing deftly nodded the ball into the far corner.

Aston Villa had largely dominated and took the lead in the 76th minute when Ross Barkley capitalised on Leon Bailey’s header back across the box, volleying it in.

Earlier, John McGinn thought he had put Villa ahead in the 28th minute, only to see his goal chalked off following a lengthy VAR check. McGinn had converted Ollie Watkins’ cutback, but VAR ruled that the ball had narrowly crossed the line for a Bournemouth goal-kick just before Watkins gained control.

Despite Villa’s superior play, it was Bournemouth substitute Evanilson who made the decisive impact, scoring just his second goal since joining from Porto in August for a club-record fee of £40.2 million.

A closer look at what happened as Bournemouth leave it late

Sometimes, all it takes is one chance, and Bournemouth made theirs count.

Andoni Iraola’s side built on their brilliant victory over Arsenal last weekend with another impressive result against a strong opponent, despite a challenging lead-up to their match at Villa Park.

On Friday, key midfielder Alex Scott was ruled out for six weeks due to a knee injury, and on Saturday, there was a surprise absence as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga picked up a muscle problem in training.

In his place, stand-in keeper Mark Travers made only his second start of the season and his 21st Premier League appearance overall. The 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international delivered a standout performance, making several crucial saves.

Alongside Travers, second-half substitute Evanilson also played a key role. Despite only touching the ball nine times, the forward still managed to make the decisive contribution.

My reaction

Villa fans would have been frustrated because they conceded a goal in the last moment, but against an ever-improving Bournemouth side, anything can happen. While victory was taken away cruelly, the result made it 11 games unbeaten for Villa and they now have 18 points from nine Premier League matches.
