Premier League: Jamie Vardy returns
Leicester City 1 - 1 Tottenham Hotspur
The ever-reliable Jamie Vardy made a memorable return to the Premier League, scoring a goal that helped newly promoted Leicester City secure a draw against Tottenham at the King Power Stadium.
At 37 years old, Vardy found the back of the net with Leicester’s first shot on target, heading in a cross from Abdul Fatawu from close range just before the hour mark.
Vardy’s goal levelled the match after Pedro Porro had given Spurs the lead in a first half where they completely dominated and should have been out of sight before Vardy’s crucial intervention.
Vardy manages to outshine Solanke
All attention had been on Tottenham's new £65 million striker, as Spurs aimed to prove they had the firepower to challenge for a top-four spot. However, it was a 37-year-old veteran who ended up stealing the show.
Dominic Solanke is the player Spurs are counting on to fill the void left by Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich last year. Although he couldn’t make the impact he hoped for in Monday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester, time is certainly on his side.
But the night belonged to a player many thought had left his Premier League days behind him—Jamie Vardy.
After Pedro Porro gave Tottenham the lead in a first half they controlled, Vardy levelled the score with Leicester's first shot on target just before the hour mark, heading in a cross from close range.
Despite his advancing years, Vardy reminded everyone of his remarkable finishing ability, which seems to have only sharpened with age. This was his 104th Premier League goal since turning 30—all of them for Leicester.
The best fan reaction
Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, told us: "I often find it hard to explain how frustrating and irritating it is to be a Tottenham fan sometimes. We will never be successful when we miss so many chances in key moments. This football club is absolutely ridiculous."
Phil, another Spurs fan from North London, added: "At the start of last season, there was a lot of talk about Spurs winning the league by November. It will be disappointing if they don't start with the same level of energy."
Stephen, a Leicester City fan, was full of praise for how his side recovered going 1-0 down. He said: "The players responded well. I thought we performed really well in the second half. It was positive to secure the first point."
