Everton: 23/24 Season Review
It was a dramatic 2023/2024 season at Goodison Park
The campaign marked Everton's 145th year and their 70th consecutive season in the top tier of English football. They also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
On 17 November, they were handed a ten-point deduction from their Premier League tally for violating the league's profit and sustainability rules, the largest points deduction in Premier League history. The club appealed the decision, with the appeal scheduled for March 2024.
On 15 January, they were found to have committed another breach of the same rules, prompting an ongoing investigation. On 26 February, the initial ten-point deduction was reduced to six points following the appeal board's decision.
On 8 April, the club were again found guilty of a second breach of the profit and sustainability rules, resulting in a further two-point deduction, pending appeal. This made Everton the first club in English top-flight history to receive two separate points deductions in a single season.
Despite all this drama, the club managed to avoid relegation to the Championship.
Let's have a closer look at how their season unfolded
In November, they lost 3-0 against Manchester United. This defeat marked Everton's 11th home league loss in the calendar year, setting a club record.
As always, they entered the FA Cup in January.Their cup campaign started with a rather boring 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. They eventually progressed after a 1-0 win over Palace in the replay. Their journey in the cup wasn't to go any further as they were knocked out by Luton Town in the 4th round.
In April, Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late penalty to secure a crucial point against Newcastle United. At the time of the match, Sarah, an Everton fan, told us: "That first half was so bad. We were awful in possession and played like we had no midfield. The changes after half-time made a massive impact. That could be a very important draw for us."
One of their worst performances of the campaign was a 6-0 defeat against Chelsea. Some Evertonians thought this was a significant blow to their hopes of avoiding relegation. A couple of weeks, all of their problems were forgotten.
In a memorable night at Goodison Park, they beat Merseyside rivals Liverpool 2-0. James, an Everton fan, told us: "That was obviously the highlight of the season. I have never heard the stadium that loud in my 25 years as a matchgoing fan
Three days later, they confirmed Premier League safety with a 1-0 win over Brentford. You can watch the highlights of that match in the video below.
Their campaign ended with a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal. However, by that point, very few Evertonians really cared that much. Their main goal of the season had been achieved and fans will be looking ahead to next season.
